Hi Guys,

I have a 2009 Suzuki Swift Sport manual, and also have the ROTTEN EGG SMELL.

This occurs only after the first minute of aggressive driving, then it goes away. Then if you return to low RPM cruising or slow speed city traffic for a while, the next time you put your foot down and rev it a bit, the smell is back.

The best suggestion so far is that it is the catalytic converter. But what I am still trying to find is the detailed solution.

There are 2 cat converters, one on the exhaust manifold and one further down the exhaust. Which one should we replace to remove this smell, and what type of converter to replace with?

I am thinking try a high flow or a sports/race cat converter.

Can anyone offer anymore info? I had also considered getting extractors to replace the stock exhaust manifold and delete that front cat altogether.

Please help! Cheers

I bought a Suzuki Swift 1.5L on Aug 2008. I had complaint twice to the service center that I get smoke smell in the car when I accelerate up to RPM 3 or 4. The technician told me that it is a common Suzuki problem, and they said they will tune for me. But I kept getting the horrible smoke smell when I push the pedal hard. Nobody seems to be able to help me on this. Can anyone please give me a solution? Or is there anywhere that I can make a complaint, and will help me?

I have a Swift Sport 07 - I am almost at 40,000km and still getting this rotten egg smell when I accelerate hard. Keep getting told by Suzuki it is a fuel problem, though independent mechanics say that it is probably a catalytic converter. Anyone else got this issue? Anyone else had a reasonable solution organised?

I sold my Skyline R32 and bought the Limited Edition Swift just about year ago and I've had no dramas with it at all, I did however experience the burning smell for a few weeks as it was brand new with nil km's, I was told that it needed time for fluids to flow/pass through etc..

A big difference compared to my R32, but I'm glad I got rid of it, too many cops targeting Japanese cars... Best decision ever.

I do think that it is a chicks car & they do rather look hot in a swift, but I also think that guys can suit the swift too but only if you mod it right and make it look hot...

Just in case anyone was concerned about the burning smell, don't be. Jamie explained the reasons why this occurs above and I know from personal experience that there's nothing to be concerned about. I have a Swift Sport and had the burning smell for a few weeks. It went away completely after that time and has been running without a single problem for more than a year and a half now. I absolutely love my car.

In reply to Anne-Maree,

IMO I think it's quite normal, for you to still have some burning smell in your Swift, after only 3 weeks.

At 3 weeks old it's still brand spanking NEW, and there's lots of seals, rubber, lubricants etc which will emit odors for a while.

As long as all your fluid levels etc are OK and your car is running normally, I wouldn't be worried.

If you are overly concerned and need to be reassured, I'd drop by your nearest Suzuki Service Centre....

MK, I'm with you there.....

I'm 37 and I definitely got tired of pouring bucket loads of petrol into my VS Holden Statesman....while driving around in the city, you could almost see the fuel gauge going DOWN, DOWN, DOWN!!

I looked around for ages and I decided on a new Suzuki Swift, and I picked her up 2 days ago...!

It's HOT....I love it.....I've always LOVED Holden's, but this Swift is pretty special...

The build quality is EXCELLENT and it really doesn't feel like you're driving a small car....apart from being so easy to park etc, I actually forget I'm in a car of this size..and I'm coming straight from a 5.0L Statesman!

Nah, I regret I didn't get a Swift YEARS ago, I would've saved a HEAP of $$$.

Hey, I'm a guy and I'm not embarrassed to say I drive a Suzuki Swift, actually I'm PROUD of it...in Europe the Swift has a CULT following and it's mostly GUYS who love em...

Once you've driven one, you'll know why....

+1 to the burning smell on my girlfriend's 3 day old Swift LE. Be interesting to see if it dissapates over time. Other than that fantastic car.

As to the arguement over girls car/boys car I don't think it is an issue these days. Maybe to some old bloke who is a bit of a fossil and who still believes firmly in the patriarchial society (BTW memo to you: your time is up, move on!)

I remember the Toyota Paseo of years ago - they actually advertised this with the tag "cars designed with women in mind". Saw heaps of guys driving them though!

In reply to Joe . My 3 week old Limited Edition has exactly the same burning smell in exactly the same conditions, it is going to be looked at this week. My daughter has had her Swift for 3 Years and has never had this happen so it is not normal!!!
