Volkswagen Golf R Cabriolet, Golf GTI Cabriolet concepts unveiled

By Brett Davis |

Volkswagen has unveiled two new concepts, the Volkswagen Golf R Cabriolet and the Volkswagen Golf GTI Cabriolet, at the 2011 Worthersee Volkswagen and Audi show in Germany.

The Volkswagen Golf R Cabriolet features the same 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine, producing 199kW of power (Euro spec) and 350Nm of torque. Capable of accelerating from 0-100km/h in 6.0 seconds, it’s said to be the fastest Golf Cabrio in history.

The car is just a concept at this stage, showcasing a number of blue-accented highlights, such as blue R-logo brake calipers, blue carbon and grey Nappa leather bucket seats. The interior also features distinctive R details throughout including special sill panels inside the doors, and a number of carbon fibre trimmings.

Volkswagen went a bit further with the Volkswagen Golf GTI Cabriolet concept, adding more dramatic details usually seen on concept vehicles. It gets large alloy wheels, aggressively flared arches and a unique bodykit trim that extends all the way around the lower edge of the car. Bespoke slimline exhaust tips at the rear complete the look.

The company hasn’t released any specifics on the car but we assume it features the same 2.0-litre TSI turbocharged four-cylinder engine as the road-going Golf GTI. In production form it produces 155kW of power and 280Nm of torque, capable of propelling the car from 0-100km/h in around 7.0 seconds.

There is no official word on whether these cars will become available on the market yet, Volkswagen is using the Worthersee Volkswagen meet to show the “inexhaustible potential of the Golf”.

I’m not a fan of convertibles full stop.

    • Jimmy

That’s nice to know. I don’t like broccoli myself.

        I like Thai food.

  • XA-Mont

It looks like the astra convertible of a few years ago.

  • Eureka

Is there enough room in the market for this and the convertible that VW already make (Eos)? I appreciate that the Eos isn’t identical (e.g.folding metal roof rather than fabric and marginally longer due to it being based on the Passat chassis)…but the two would be very similar.

    • XA-Mont

the eos isn’t really a performance convertible though… where as the GTI kind of would be.

The Eos came with the MkV GTI Golf motor as one of the engine options..anyway the EOS looks far better than this half-baked design.

I think VW needs to concentrate on actually supplying stock for the models they allready have!

Yes, and also building more dependable cars in general!

100% agree. I laughed at the salesman who told me there’s an 18 month waiting list for the R.

I can understand they’re doing it on purpose to justify price-tag to exclusivity. But c’mon, surely people aren’t that dumb to fall for it!

      • KD

You obviously spoke the the wrong salesman!

you could pick up and R immedicately if you’re not fussy on options or colour, in a few months if you’re flexible on the options or wait around 6 months for a factory build.

        Find yourself another dealer.

The GTI actually looks faster/meaner. I’d take it in a heartbeat over the R if this is what they’d look like in production guise.

  • Jav

I like the wheels on the GTI version and would look good on the GTI with a roof!

  • sammy

the proportions look weird on this car…does not look good at all

  • GooSE

from the side it looks almost identical to an audi a3 cabriolet

    • GooSE

      with the roof up*

  • Rene’ P

A GTI wagon would be an awesome addition to the range.
