Speeding? You’re gonna get a flogging!
April 23, 2008 by Alborz Fallah
Even though we have tried hard to dismiss the Speed-Kills myth here at CarAdvice, we must count ourselves lucky, because at least in Australia all we can get is a speeding ticket, few hundred dollar fine and possibly a loss of license, not so for motorists residing in Iran.
New rules passed by the Iranian government now give authorities the power to sentence drivers caught driving dangerously to 74 lashes or several months in jail, Iran’s traffic police chief says.
“Drivers who commit dangerous acts will be referred to court for harming public order and the court can sentence violators to three months to a year in jail or 74 lashes, their vehicles will also be seized for a week,’ Mohammad Rouyanian was quoted as saying by the Kayhan newspaper.
Seems a little extreme doesn’t it? Although with the oil rich nation’s road toll being one of the worst in the world (100,000 over the past five years), perhaps it might just be the incentive dangerous drivers need.
The biggest causes of accidents, according to Iranian police, are speeding and overtaking on the wrong side of the road. The country has recently eased restrictions on the import of foreign cars and the rich and wealthy have found a desire for luxury cars and SUVs.
Despite the harsh new laws, many believe it’s simply to deter bad drivers. Other crimes which will get you flogged include theft and adultery, although in reality it has been used infrequently in the past.

ouch?
That should be brought in here – will make the hoons think twice.
after 74 whips you ain’t gonna feel like sitting down much. i’d just make them drive an old skoda.
Perhaps they should start beating f*ck wits who tail gate, talk on phones, eat cereal while driving, read papers, cut you off, sleep – need I go on? Give me the whip, I’ll use it on the way to work tomorrow.
I’ve travelled to quite a few countries on holidays over the years and while there are many things wrong with Australia i still haven’t seen or been to a country that I’d rather live in for the rest of my life!!!!!
I’m not religious but i can under stand how theists refer to Australia as gods country…..this truly is a great place to live and raise kids!!!!
Hear Hear Carl. You’re right there. I mean what sort of stone age b@stards would whip one another? It’s atrocious.
Little wonder then so many people from that region chose to move here, who could blame them! I’d take a fine and a few points any day over a whipping.
It all depends who is at the end of the whip. Ouch.
A whipping for speeding is too harsh.
A whipping for vandalism, stealing, rioting, especially juveniles who regularly flout the law etc now that’s sounds good to me.
People have a “steel trap” memory where physical pain is concerned.
Is there any truth in the rumour that Max Mosley is moving to Iran.
Nice one Spitfire!
If you commit adultery while you’re speeding and overtaking dangerously, do you cop a flogging or just the death penalty, or death first then flogging, or flogging first then death?
If you give Max Mosley a few lashes does that constitute Community Service and get you a lighter sentence?
…….
Toyota drivers in Iran Need not Worry about this law as there cars are all to boring and slow to break the speed limit
I would think humiliation would have a better mind stick than physical/Solitary/Monetary punishment, if you get a kid who vandals all the time, making him dress like a little girl or something he fears… and making him walk up and down a city would have a permanent mental truama i reckon >:D
Yeah, Australia is definitely a great place to live.. especially Melbourne!! hehe.
Only if we had the economy that other developed nations have…. then they can afford to sell cars for half the price they currently retail in Oz… not only that, food and other everyday necessities… because Oz pays almost double that of the U.S for everything apart from service (hospitality etc).
Jamison, before complaining about how much tax everything has over here consider this….I wouldn’t want to get sick in the USA even with private health insurance let alone without….it’s a great place to visit but as the carer of a disabled young adult i wouldn’t want to live in a place that gives disabled people coupons to buy some food…..that’s a cold hearted place!!!!
So that’s why things cost more here coz we are more civilised with our weak citizens!!!!!
Jamison – I travelled a little and things are not much cheaper for basic goods anywhere. I thought Australia would have been cheaper than the Uk but strangely there was not much of a difference and say groceries. Things I did notice insurances were cheaper as were speeding fines and of course fuel. Diesel in the UK is now AU$2.87/litre
