Video: Toyota FT-86 spied on the street

By Brett Davis |

Toyota has been caught driving a test mule of the highly anticipated Toyota FT-86 in Germany. After loads of concept vehicle releases, this is the first time we’ve seen an actual working pre-production model up and running.

The video doesn’t provide an excellent representation of what the car is about but you do get a taste of what the engine sounds like, although you do need to turn it up. And the good news is, it doesn’t seem to sound like a dreary, Gran Turismo-esque, generic Japanese car; there’s a distinct howl and a harmonious whine to it.

Official engine specifications still haven’t been released yet. All we know is it will be a four-cylinder Subaru boxer engine of some kind. It will feature a rear-wheel drive layout and a six-speed manual transmission, making it a truly desirable sports car for driving enthusiasts.

You also get an idea of the car’s size and proportions on the road. Take a look at the videos below.

We’ll be sure to provide more details on the car in the future and full coverage from its local unveiling at the Australian International Motor Show in Melbourne on July 1.

Ok seriously, enough. Stop it. I don’t want to hear anymore about this car until they’re showing us the PRODUCTION MODEL. It’s frustrating getting this excited for a car thats still a long way away from reality.

Thanks in advance for your cooperation

    • gazza

It’s a hell of a lot closer than you think! Start getting excited get very excited!

  • crouchy

Just imagine how many they would sell if it came out looking like the FR-S!

    • Roadtard

Absolutely! I reckon that FR-S / FT-86 II Concept looks amazing!

  • heath

there is conformation that this model wont be a turbo but it will be a direct injection NA maximum power around 150kw toyota fail :(

    • gazza

“HEATH” That is rubbish you just made that up! THERE WILL BE 2 MODELS A STANDARD NON TURBO & A TRD VERSION TURBO! You will see by mid 2012! You have no idea what you are talking about.

      • Richard

        @Gazza…. and you do?

Though there are scant real details on the performance of this vehicle one thing that is the least likely is a turbo model at its release.

        • gazza

You are right about one thing only, THE TRD TURBO VERSION WILL BE RELEASED LATER IN 2012 AFTER THE BASE MODEL INTRODUCTION,I got this from a very reliable source. And yes “RICHARD” they dont call me FIGJAM for nothing!

  • Showtime

Yay for frameless windows on the doors! Reminds me of the earlier Impreza models.

  • ANF

Dont think it will look like the concept that they’ve shown, for sum reason however i keep feeling like the front is going to look like a swept back rukus, they are going to tone it down alot before it hits the showroom floors for sure

  • Pauly

Quit with the teasing Toyota. It’s gone beyond a joke now. The more time that car is under cover, the more time the accountants can get ahold of it and take away more and more and more flare the original concept had.

  • UMWHAT

i seriously hope they’ve just put on some extremely good camouflage there because that shape is ugly. nothing like the concepts

  • sven

    I’ll be boring.
    It’s a Toyota.

Relax everyone, that’s just the new paint job on my old Hyundai Scoupe. Move on nothing to see here.
