Why are there only airconditionor for front seat and not covering the whole car? The Temprature in the Gulf States is very high in summer.

I have a TD200 Defender 110, had it for around 3 years and love it to bits. They are a serious 4wd. I know many people with Japanese junks and the Landy beats them all!

Perhaps not on the highway but off road, these things transform. The coil suspension is fantastic. Its taken Toyota years to catch up. (and still haven’t)

I have worked in the bush out of my defender and done thousands of kms. I have driven it around Australia and it was great. Crossed deserts, climbed mountains, waded rivers, conquered sand dunes and more.

I have so many fond memories in my Defender I will never forget.

They have their fair share of problems but so do most cars. Patrols dodgy gear boxes and Cruisers rustiness.
My Landy broke a CV joint at 400000Kms and blew a oil cooler hose at 390000Kms. I have replaced other parts before they broke but only through general wear and tear.

I would recommend one of these to anyone who needs a very capable off roader. The TD5 is a great engine, why change it?

Hmm… I see they’ve finally put a separate sump on this engine, for the only purpose to squirt oil on the ground without using the real oil. :)

Seen it, drove it, loved it, bought it. Put my deposit down in Feb. I’ve had one Landie(Series III, 202 red motor), Two Patrols MQ diesel(SWB)and GQ (LWB petrol/gas) and a Rodeo (petrol). Drove the standard Defender, no race car but respectable for what it is. If your worried about price check out the RRP on the new Toyotas and Patrols!
Driving position is a little close to the door, I can get used to that. More leg room in the back seat than a Patrol or a Toyota. Mate just bought a new 200 Series (traded in an 80 series) Another mate has a 100 Series and yet another mate has a Discovery (drinks like a fish! The car not him). Anyway I’ve made my decision, I reckon you take a closer look before knockem!!!

This looks good. Having driven a string of Nissans and Toyotas for work in forestry, park management and mining jobs over the past 20 years and being a recent convert to Land Rover (I got sucked into all the rubbish thats waffled about them by people who know jack about off roading, that and I eventually just got sick of digging, jacking and whinching my Nissans and Toyotas out of fairly simple situations). I’m glad to see someones still making a real 4WD that’s guaranteed to work straight out of the box without having to shop it to ARB and spend money to give it off-road ability.

Some of the fancier features wont sit too comfortably with it’s “hose out” personality but I guess it could be a concession to people looking for a bit more comfort when driving the kids to school.

Massey Ferguson= iconic tractor.
Defender= icon truck.

I like the shape of these – they are old but I reckon it’s a design that doesn’t really date. They look tough…
What I don’t get is the relevance of the add ons – you’d buy one of these to take on the beach or the outback somewhere, so not sure whether leather Recaros and luxury items are the best option. How about one done up as more of an adventurous vehicle with nudge bar, extra spotlights and so on? Would be a bit more relevant and fitting in with the company’s history.
Plus, and I say this at the risk of exciting the Toyota diehards commenting, it would be great to have the Land Cruiser V8 for reliability!

Yeah Troy. I know a Series IIA Landrover with it’s original engine what ever it was, probally a Massey Ferguson tractor engine replaced with a Holden red motor, I think it’s was 173cu.

I wonder if these new Defenders have the same old suspension set-up as the Series 1’s & 2’s? I hope so because they were really tough so they could take any hard rough road but the problem is it made them so rough to ride in you would almost think the wheels are made of cement, so they needed 3 ribs on the roof just to stop your head from going through it.

thats modern compared to this tank. i still remember the ex army pos my dad had when i was a kid…. ripped out the original 4cyl, put in a holden 202 bucket…. and it was twice as good on fuel… LOL

An understressed POS Ford diesel engine that wrecks heads at 40,000ks (assuming that’s true – it sounds probable.)

Just what we want old chap, especially when we head off on our trans Australian trip with the odo on 39,000. Bloody bad show if we need a new head at Oodnadatta.

I think the defender is looking a little bit over dressed and extremely over priced. Above comments all valid, however small minds looking at the minuet portion of why this vehicle is the way it is – it is running such low HP etc…..Produced in the UK, The toughest emission controls in the world, big twin turbo v8s don’t appeal to Mrs Bucket (too noisey!!) and the emissions can not get as low as Europe requires, the vehicle crawls up most difficult terrain without popping it into low range (Ani stall), they were first on site to build the Snowy hydro scheme (Toyota didn’t come on seen till a least 1958) Land rover was there since 1949, the work was already done when Toyota got on site, and honestly why change perfection 60 years and retain the same shape.
Stating a few little things why this vehicle is the way it is.

Iconic is one way to describe the Defender, But an icon of what? An icon of unreliability? An icon of underpower? An icon of 1960s design (which to the layperson is almost identical tho the original 1948 model)?

At 63K it is way overpriced. And under powered. To quote from their own website:

“Defender´s all new 2.4litre Diesel engine produces a class-leading 360Nm of Torque (90 percent of peak power is on tap from less than 2,200rpm to over 4,350rpm)”

Exactly what class are they refering to? Vehicles owned by the Tata corporation? Nissan pathfinder 2.5 T/D 400Nm, Landcruiser 70 series 430Nm, Nissan patrol 3.0T/D 380Nm. All Japanese Turbo diesels now produce peak torque at or below 2000 rpm. They can only manage 90% of an average figure @2200 rpm. And 90kW? That may have been acceptable 7 years ago, but now is way off the pace.

All they have done is blinged up an old workhorse and charged 15 to 20K too much.

Looks great and sounds great. All you need to is hop in and head for the first mountain. I personally like the defender , indeed there are some problems but this is life . All cars have issues

Rather a 70series wagon any day. That defender is typical Landrover unreliable, and gutless. Why dont they put the 3.6L V8 twin turbo diesel in it out of the Range Rover?
