2007 Porsche Cayenne S Turbo

You know the first time I saw a Porsche Cayenne, I had to follow it just so I could see it a little better, I'd seen it at car shows, and seen heaps and heaps of concepts, but it was a Porsche SUV, and no one really thought Porsche would go through with it, but when money is tight at the market is right, Porsche have proven they will do anything.

So four years after the model’s launch, Porsche, or more formally Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG of Stuttgart, Germany, is presenting the second generation of its sporty SUV. The new, Cayenne, Cayenne S and Cayenne Turbo models have been given more powerful, direct gasoline injection engines. That seems to be the biggest advancement for the new model, as with everything Porsche, it still looks the same, not that its a bad thing as the Cayenne looks great.

The new Engines are referred to by Porsche as Direct Fuel Injection (DFI), and they lower the fuel consumption of individual models by over eight percent (NEDC). In real driving conditions, savings of up to 15 percent are possible. The new Cayenne will be in Porsche showrooms from February 24, 2007 in Europe, no exact confirmation of its arrival down under, but reports suggest a late 07 arrival.

So let sgo through the power gains :

2007 Porsche Cayenne - 40-bhp (29-kW) power enhancement and is now driven by a 290-bhp (213-kW) six-cylinder engine, the displacement of which has increased from 3.2 to 3.6 liters. The torque of the Cayenne has climbed from 310 to 385 Nm. It can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 8.1 seconds, reaching a top speed of 227 km/h. The previous model managed 9.1 seconds and 214 km/h.

2007 Porsche Cayenne S, 4.8-liter, naturally aspirated V8 engine, produces a torque of 500 Nm (previously 420 Nm) and an output of 385 bhp (283 kW), an increase of 45 bhp (33kW). 0-100 time of 6.6 seconds and a top speed of 252 km/h. (Previous model: 6.8 seconds and 242 km/h.)

2007 Porsche Cayenne Turbo 500 bhp (368 kW) and 700 Nm (previously 620 Nm) Yes 700 Nm!- 50 bhp (37 kW) higher than that of its predecessor. 0-100 km/h in 5.1 seconds and has a maximum speed of 275 km/h. (Previous model: 5.6 seconds and 266 km/h.)

Power delivery is guaranteed by Porsche Traction Management (PTM) system which, when left alone in a normal driving situation will distribute all that power between the rear and front wheels in a ratio of 62:38. But when shove comes to push the multi-disk clutch can direct up to 100% of drive traction to the front or rear as required - a system more advanced than most modern day rally cars!

For those who really have a lot of money (and little else) The Cayenne Turbo will the ideal car to drive the kids to and from school, so now that the new Porsche comes fitted with Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) with air suspension as standard, I'd imagine a spirited drive will be in order once in a while. The Cayenne Turbo can also now be augmented with the new Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC) roll stabilizer system for a bit extra (the bit extra can potentially buy you a Toyota Yaris). Porsche says the new systems constant roll control, (which is also available for the Cayenne and Cayenne S), limits vehicle roll on corners and counterbalances it completely in almost all driving situations. So despite the Cayenne rather enormous size, the handling, directional stability and ride comfort will most likely surpass many family cars designed for comfort.

Porsche knows well that 99.99% of its Cayenne owners will never take their car off-road When off-road but for that 0.001% who dare to be bold, the PDCC system enables maximum axle articulation and improves traction in off-road sitations.

The new Cayenne will come standard with:

  • Porsche Stability Management (PSM),
  • brake assist function,
  • advanced trailer stabilization system
  • off-road ABS
  • static and dynamic bend lighting : the bi-xenon headlamps fitted as standard to the Cayenne Turbo increase active safety. The system can also be ordered for the Cayenne and Cayenne S. The system is once the car reaches a speed of three kilometers per hour.

No prices for the new Cayennes have so far been released by Porsche Australia, but current prices are:

  • Porsche Cayenne S :  130,000
  • Porsche Cayenne Tubro :  207,100
