Video: Super Saloon Showdown – HSV R8
April 8, 2008 by George Skentzos
Oh dear. See how the HSV Clubsport R8 – better known as the Vauxhall VXR8 in Britain – performs in a simple drag race against the world’s super saloons: the Mercedes Benz C 63 AMG, the BMW M3 and the Lexus IS-F.
Skip through to 3:00 for the drag race.

Who cares, Have a look at the reports on the new FG GE6 turbo. 5.1 sec to 100kph. The HSV product just got hammered at home.
The Vauxhall VXR8 would have one in the space test, though for sure!
Oh please! Why not put a Bugatti Veyron in there too and then say that all the other cars were crap! What a useless comparison made by mindless idiots.
what a bunch of trannie toffs. comparison was no-where. the R8 isn’t that slow, the C63 should have been quicker. They just wanted the BMW to win. BMW sponsored?
I agree with Sam R, the next time these clowns it should be a Ferrari F430 vs a Veyron vs a Suzuki swift. That will be a fair comparison wont it.
Too much journalism out there not enough people smart enough to do it!
And very good point GhisGT where was the traction control?? none of the other cars had any wheelspin.
To you guys who think a VRX8 or clubsport R8 is a class above M3 and Merc. I’ll make you happy and compare it with a car made nearly 10 years ago.
Vauxhall VXR8 (V8 6.2l engine 417 BHP) = 1999 M5 (V8 400bhp, 4.9l engine), not quite, BMW still wins the power to engine ratio stakes with a 20th century engine.
Another thing a manual tranny is generally faster than an auto except for only three or four autos so far, porsche having one of them.DCT/DSG from BMW/VW respectivelly are not autos, they are automated dual clutch manuals.
Haha, if the VXR8 had of been quicker, I bet nobody would have had a problem with the way the test was conducted. ;)
Did Top Gear not love this car. Clarkson is the only person I listen too. He tells it how it is. They also had the Japanese Drift champion who loved the power to drift in also. The 08 M3 is not that much fun. It can be a pig. And before you get excited, I race a GT3, so yes, I can drive. The 08 R8 is a great car for a what you pay for it.
Clarkson likes the HSV cos its easy to power slide with… unfortunately when it comes to getting around a track quickly you dont want a car thats so easy to unsettle, its not a good attribute.
The Holden here is out of its class and the driver was shit its not all that much slower. Im not a Holden fan but ill defend it because that was an unfair comparison but that isnt the best car Australia has 2 offer look up the FPV F6 big, cheap and goes better.
