2008 TRD HiLux specifications

April 8, 2008 by George Skentzos

Toyota has released official specifications for its second addition to the TRD range – the TRD HiLux, the high performance version of Australia’s favourite ute.

2008 TRD HiLux specifications

Derived from the double-cab 4×4 version of the standard HiLux, the TRD model adds an intercooled Eaton supercharger to the standard 4.0-litre quad-cam V6 petrol engine.

Maximum power has been increased by 28.5 percent to 225kW whilst peak torque has risen by 20.4 percent to 453Nm at just 3400rpm.

2008 TRD HiLux specifications

More than the equivalent maximum torque of 376Nm produced by the standard HiLux is delivered from just above idle all the way to 5700rpm on the TRD model.

Zero to 100km/h performance jumps to just 7.2 seconds, whilst retaining fuel-economy figures comparable with the standard HiLux at just 12.9 litres per 100km.

2008 TRD HiLux specifications

Similar to the TRD Aurion, the supercharged HiLux will be available in two model grades – 4000S and 4000SL.

Both grades come standard with twin front airbags, ABS anti-lock brakes, air conditioning, cruise control, power windows and mirrors, remote central locking and DataDot security.

2008 TRD HiLux specifications

The TRD HiLux also has specially calibrated monotube Bilstein shock absorbers and 17-inch alloy wheels with all-terrain tyres.

Other enhancements include larger front brake rotors and calipers, a TRD body kit, sports bar and leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift lever.

2008 TRD HiLux specifications

TRD HiLux 4000S is priced at $59,990 and the 4000SL at $64,990. The only option is metallic paint at $300.

CarAdvice will be reviewing the new TRD HiLux shortly.

I would rather buy a 3.0 SR5 and save my money for mods that the hilux now needs to go off road that the old ones didn’t. Like a lift kit to start with.
Toyota would have been better off building a better performing TRD diesel version using say the landcruiser V8 diesel!!! Now thats what I want!!!
I like teh Hilux, but interior is uncomfortable and well below the standard set for 60+ cars.

  2. Duck says:

Still a bit soft with exterior styling, could have changed rear lights. The interior is too bland! Yuk!

  3. Duck says:

    Dingo,
The FPV F6X will easily get bogged! We all know that ford territorys are crap off road! The Hilux will beat it easily!

  4. Ranger Better, Hilux Sux says:

The Ford Territory is not really meant to go off road silly people so why compare, more like a Ford Ranger would eat a lolux for breakfast, there is enough Dingo’s in this world already, I would rather be seen in a Territory or Ranger than a dressed up bland boring Toyoda……

  5. Duck says:

Sorry to burst your bubble Ranger Better, Hilux Sux……………….but the Hilux is a better ute than the crummy ford ranger!

  6. alec says:

Didn’t the BT-50 and Ford Ranger just win 4×4 of the year!!

  7. PoisonEagle says:

Dingo/TP whatever u call yourself, you belong in an institution. Yes you are weak thats the reason you get behind the almighty Toyota.
1.I respect Toyota plenty, and they do deserve praise for being in the position its in, but not plenty because how hard is it to exploit sheep such as yourself?
    2. FORD AND HOLDEN HAVE FUTURE plans,Commodore is sold in almost every continent and GM and Ford have been around for over 100 years. contrary to your grandiose, outlandish ‘ there souls are being torn out’ ‘get a size 20 up me please’ garbage you awlways recycle. It makes u look like a douchebag robot gaylord.
    3. TRD languishes compared to FPV and HSV’s specs, you can’t even switch off stability program or get a manual gearbox, shows how much faith Toyota has in their chassis’
I’d say TRD will go long before Ford and Holden do. Come on, get real you halfwit
    4. It’s dubious whether or not your mature enough to handle a blog like this, or why your even allowed on here; always jumping down people’s throats if they dont like a Toyota. Maybe you should leave the discussion to the grown ups.

  8. Ranger Better, Hilux Sux says:

Didn’t the BT-50 and Ford Ranger just win 4×4 of the year !!

Thats correct Alec, BT-50 & Ranger are so much better, Hilux can’t even win top awards because they are boring bland fleet or hired trash….

  9. Glen says:

Jamison, remember HSV & FPV may not be huge in themselves globally but their owners are. Tom Walkinshaw & Prodrive have been engneering aftermarket programs for years whereas TRD only recently began doing so, even worldwide.

Whoever compared this as the same target market as the cross 8 crewman is dead right, and remember how that whole model range went.

The terriotry has never, EVER been marketed as an off road vehicle so to compare the 2 vehicles is utterly ridiculous in that segment. I thought FPV could’ve done more with the exterior of the F6-X but at least the interior has been improved with more than just a bit of red here & there. Just needs bigger wheels and will be sweet

  10. RoFlmaTiC says:

Toyota driver here… Personally I think the gray decals on the side and back of the cars are horrid… other than that they should be pretty fun toys offroad.

To Dingo – if you stop creating all these new silly names and take a more reserved or balanced view on these blogs then you will have far more credibility. Seriously after a while it does become rather annoying and pointless.

  11. Have a look at all the hoo-haa meaningless dribble from the gobs of the wacked out Holden and Ford clowns. Lets face the fact which is reality and not La, La, Land – the Ford Ranger / BT50 have got absolutely nothing on the Hilux … PERIOD !!

The greatest test of all – Test Of Time – has proven the Hilux to be one of the most reliable, rugged, dependable and durable work horses on the market as with each and every other Toyota 4×4 and that is FACT in the real world.
Any other statement otherwise is a an absloute load of crock from a wacked out freak of nature … PURE & SIMPLE !!

The greatest challenge of all for these vehicles is segments of the market being Farmers, Tradies, Heavy Industries and Mines and all of them bar none predominately opt for a Toyota commercial over any other with the Hilux particularly being a popular choice while the Ford Ranger / BT50 are barely even recognised units in the real world.

Oh yeah – correct me if i am wrong but the Ranger/ BT50 have a dismal 3 star crash rating compared to the much better 4 star achievement of the LUX.

Besides, there is no greater judge then the market who vote with thier wallets and the Hilux happens to be Australia’s 3rd biggest selling unit while the combined effort from the Ranger and BT50 don’t even come within cooee of the LUX … oooch !!

  12. Poison Eagle – you have got nothing, absolutely nothing because you are p*ss weak. Go and play with your toys in the bedroom. Oh yeah – and start living in the real world were Toyota outsells Holden and Ford combined instead of La, La, Land were people still actually buy junk from Holden.

RoFlmaTic – farirdinkum … forget the lecture, don’t waste your time. I ain’t here to make friends but put a bit of truth and prespective in the blog were the typical Holden and ford freaks have a habit of talking nothing less then utter shear bullsh*t non-sense.

Truth and reality really bites hard sometimes … doesn’t it.

    March 2008 sales :

    Toyota – 21 700
    Holden – 11 200
    Ford – 9200

Holden and Ford combined is less then Toyota’s sole effort – no need to say any more.

    OH WHAT A FEELING … TOYOTA !!

ps. It was you Holden and Ford freaks WHO started attacking other brands many years ago but now it has all come about to bite you freaks hard … HA, HA, HA – I’M LOV’N IT

  13. golfschwein says:

Do you belt your kids, Dingo?

  14. GhisGT says:

I recon CarAdvice could post up a news piece about migration patterns of the Pacific Ocean Red Turtle and they would still get half wits making retarded comments about the Ford vs. Holden vs. Toyota debate.

Come on CarAdvice admins, we need a log in system here to pi$$ these 13 year-old freaks off back to Year 9 where they should have stayed before leaving school and attempting to raise a ‘family’ with their toothless sisters. This repetitive ‘XXXXX brand suck, YYYYY brand rule’ mentality just reaffirms how young and naive these posters are. This site needs to be taken seriously.

  15. Dingo says:

Love my kids, love my wife and love the town i live in – Life is good.

However, i hate Holden and Ford freaks who struggle to appreciate the efforts and achievements of other fantastic manufactuers in the world. Fact is, Holden and Ford don’t rule the roost in Oz no more while Toyota continues to grow in consumer popularity and you people struggle to deal with it so offer nothing more then just bullsh*t utter nonesense dribble in an effort to discredit a reputable automotive manufactuer.

In todays world we witness Toyota flexing it’s might and you people have been caught of guard how good they can tackle the market.

Toyota, TRD Oz and Lexus in Australia is undoubtedly the most formible automotive group on our soil.

    How times have changed !!

anyway, enough from me because i have nihtshift for the next ciuple of nights so must get my head down for nap before starting this eveneing.

    cheers

ps. love that new Toyota Tough Truck !!

  16. Dingo says:

damn … spelling went to sh*t, will have to learn to double check my dismal spelling at times.

  17. Duck says:

Alec, So what if they did! It doesnt matter really because there probaly talking about the overall car not the 4×4ing (off road ability)like i was.

  18. reader says:

Hey Dingo, rumour is Toyota outsold Porsche and Ferrari combined. What does this mean?

  19. alec says:

    Duck,
Unless you have got a pre ‘independent front suspension’ hilux, then the off road ability is no better than a BT50 or Ranger. So we are talking anything pre 2000 I think, and anything not SR5.
The Independent front end cut ground clearance by a lot and basically brought the Hilux down to the level of the competition. Not to mention loss of wheel articulation. Sure it was better on road, but everyone that bums a Hilux always refers to their off road ability.

I know, the old 93 Hilux my mate had went everywhere, and I mean everywhere – BOG STOCK. The newer ones, no chance. You need Lift kit and rock sliders if you want to push them as hard.

Only problem with earlier Hilux’s is they were GUTLESS. Anyone who had a diesel would know what I am talking about

  20. Dlr1 says:

Alec, Independent Front Suspension became standard during 1997. They still had better groung clearance in the centre of the vehicle and better aproach / departure angles than the competition. The new model suffers a bit in the ground clearance department, but thats the compromise. People these days expect better on road handling than any previous hilux.

  21. Glen says:

Dingo, there is nothing wrong with being a Toyota enthusiast. The problem is your attitude to anyone who isn’t. You treat them as lesser than you just because their opinion isn’t the same as yours. And I notice this from a lot of imported brand “enthusiasts”. The FACT is you come up with nothing but dribble by saying, Hi-lux is better than ranger without offering anything to back it up.

You are relying on their reputation when in fact the competition has caught up and even overtaken the hilux in a lot of areas such as off-road capability, entrance & exit angles and road handling.

And the only thing you use to back up your arguments is car sales figures. But if you looked hard enough you’ll notice that the majority of Toyota sales are fleet were the company just goes for whoever gives them the best deal. Hey im not saying that Ford & Holden dont have fleet sales but obviously Toyota are willing to cut more $$$ off their cars for fleet buyers.

Yes Toyota make a good quality car but you as a supporter bring them down. Just shut-up and let people have their opinion or f**k off. If you don’t like the people on here just leave. But we know you just love s**t stirring to get a reaction so from when i finish this comment you will not get another response from me & hopefully no-one else towards any of your insignificant comments.

  22. Glen… you are WRONG !!

The Toyota Hilux retains is rugged off-road ability but further more remains a more reliable, dependable and durable vehicle and that’s were i make my call from.

As i mentioned before, the greatest test of all – Test Of Time – is were the Hilux excells beyond much of it’s direct competitors and i can assure you now that the Ranger / BT 50 just DO NOT have the same level of durablity as the Hilux and sense i am employed by Rio Tinto in a Central Queenland mine as i have been for the past 4 years you can take from someone who is exposed to these vehicles 4 out of every 8 days so i support my statement with direct experiance not la,la, land hoo haa dribble from freaks … PERIOD !!

As for car sales figures …no better example then the Hilux’s continued popularity amoung farmers, Tradies, Heavy Industries and Mine Sites to the ongoing favourable characteristics of the Lux especially compared to the Ranger / BT50.

Infact, the Hilux is 4 star crash rated to the less safe 3 stars of the Ranger / BT50 … says a lot really !!

It is not just about off-road ability but how rugged, reliable, dependable and durable these vehicles are and in this case the Hilux remains the choice for most. And believe you-me, Ford has been flogging of the Ranger at highly competitive prices so don’t you worry about that.

And even better – take the time and talk to any one employed in the Industries and ask then what thier preferances are between a Hilux and a Ranger / BT50 … but then again – don’t bother because you will predominately get the same answer every time.

And while talking about dribble … no one talks more dribble then a typical Holden/Ford freak because they are the biggest bunch of poor sportsman going. They hate losing outright to Toyota so they come up with all sorts of wacked out comments that i have challenged many times in the past and then couldn’t support thier claims sotherwise.

Take a stroll to the Subaru suspended sales article and while it has nothing to do with Toyota, just because the BIG T has some shares in them all the bullsh*t unsupportive crap just poors out of thier gobs.

Fairdinkum … these clowns should be wearing bibs if they don’t already do. No wonder the Holden/Ford freak is todays most dis-respected clown.

Just for good measure – i don’t dribble, just hard core facts that you people can not handle because it is to close to the raw truth of todays motoring society.

And one final comment – my statements are my opinions and if you don’t like them then sh*t the fu*k and p*ss off because this dog is going nowere … loser !!

  23. PoisonEagle says:

could NOT have said it better myself, Glen.

  24. PoisonEagle says:

Well done Dingo, yet another blissfully ironic pool of yeasty discharge. Id advise people to avoid his posts, as they will make you dumber and offer nothing of any value whatsoever. Same thing day in day out, at a pathalogical frequency. What a life.

  25. Dingo says:

What was that … another raw response and to close to the truth call from Dingo – that’s more to the point.

Better still … actually tell me what part of my comment is infact NOT TRUE !! – this will be good and then we’ll see who’s calling the shots here.

    cheers

  26. YES AVOID DINGO, HE HAS A CASE ABOVE FLEAS…..FOOT AND MOUTH

  27. Phill says:

Looks like Toyota playing catch up,another dead end car(just like TRD Aurion) from the Toyota motor company.

  28. PoisonEagle says:

Rule the roost? Is that what this is about? you must struggle to assert domination at home or work so you need this. I read about all I could stand of your crap and I found one false statement ‘ Nobody buys Holden or Ford anymore’ they are still dominant market forces, apart from that despite the daunting length of your posts, the crux of your argument was sales figures and crash test results which u reused over and over. What you obviously lack in depth and intelligence you try and compensate with as i said before pathalogical frequency.

  29. Iamthestig says:

Yes, this thread has convinced me that if CA doesn’t get more stringent with moderating comments or requiring logins, the PR people are going to flood us with crap…

Yes, I am OT, but no more than some of the drivel above !

  30. TP says:

Niiiice. Interior is bland but exterior unlike the Falcon and Commodore is distinctive (in a good way) and the performance speaks for itself. You know Toyota have done well when all people can attack is the look of the engine bay! Btw Wheelnut if you think all the Aurion has is a bolted on supercarger, even just talking in terms of the engine, then your more clueless then I originally thought

  31. TP says:

Re handling how can you say a 4WD with this much power will struggle but other 2WD utes, such as Falcon and Commodore are good, 2WD and a complete lack of weight over drive wheels is a hazard

  32. Phill says:

Looks like a cat chucked uy in the engine bay(what a mess)

  33. Andrew M says:

    TP,
    this is 4WD not AWD.
no way in the world would you drive around the streets in 4wd mode if thats what you were illuding to

you also might be surprised to see how well the others sports ute variants do handle

“complete lack of weight over wheels”?????????
    more like
“complete lack of knowledge on the subject”

  34. TP says:

More like completley biased idiot for you AndrewM. I will take the 4WD over RWD thanks… hell Id have it over the Falcons even if it was RWD, at least its somethign new, not another plain, boring and slow Falcon

  35. Andrew M says:

    TP,
do you know what 4wd is or even how it works?
its now a performance drive train. you only run it when you need it

  36. Johno084 says:

    Fella’s far out!

Everyone is entitled to their point of view about things in life, that’s life that if a bt50/ranger, triton, hilux, commodore or falcon whatever you drive or follow hey that’s cool it’s your ride/decision. I guess people get caught up in the moment. Some bloggers have valid points and some don’t.

To the point, I drive a HiLux SR5 dualcab v6 auto i’m a tradie and tow a trailer and it is a good work/recreation vehicle and it stands out on the road, and attracts attention.

The new trd hilux, well for price and what you get for the money, to me it’s not worth the asking price. Fine it might have leather seats, be supercharged, more of a sportier/tougher look but for 10to15k more compared to a SR5 v6 you a better off buying a standard SR5 and doing your own mods on it maybe put sat/nav like a eclipse avn 6000 with ipod control, rear view camera, change speakers amp it and add a sub if your into car entertainment, which i’ve done to my vehicle. (the trd hilux still has the standard 6 disc in dash unit found in a SR5) a disappointment.

My opinion and this my thought and to those knockers out there you can knock if you want i don’t care. If you want a supercharged hilux buy a new sr5 v6 or near new, get a aftermarket supercharger from raptor or capa etc roughly $6500 to $8500 fitted, maybe leather around 3 to 5k if you know a motor trimmer might be cheaper, and also a sat/nav unit start at around 2.5k to around 4k fully decked out. Rough figures it comes just under 65k. If your in business for yourself a vehicle used for work can be claimed under the Australian tax system especially a ute, and even some of the mods you do you can claim, if your smart.

The trd hilux 4000S is based on a sr hilux and the 4000SL is based on a SR5 hilux.

    Happy motoring!

  37. golfschwein says:

4WD didn’t stop the Kluger tipping over like me and me mates on Sat’dy noight. Or was that the FWD version? oops, silly me! That never happened LOL! :)

Just look at the pictures and have a guess how high its roll centre is. It’d never see which way a Commodore or Falcon ute went once the road turns and twists.

The stripes, the Matchbox Superfast wheels and the red steering wheel all add up to a racey cardigan, no more.

  38. Dlr1 says:

Yes golf, it won’t ever catch a Commo or Faclon once the road bends, but then again most new Commodore utes can’t even mount a gutter without sratching something underneath. I cant really see any genuine buyers having to decide between the two. Totally different markets. And yes, stripes, on anything look boganish.

  39. Here we go again... :( says:

It took a blower to get a 7.2 second 0-100?? HAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHA

Now you are in taxi territory, look out all you 800,000km old au falcons, you have some drag racing competition!

What next, a TRD Prius???!!! LOL

  40. Glen says:

johno your right everyone is entitled to their opinion, but when someone such as the toyota fan on here comes on here, says his piece then attacks anyone who has not got the same opinion as them its just plain wrong.

My opinion is that toyota do make quality cars, but I dont think they’re anything special, even these TRD ones I don’t believe are anything to brag about. I think your better off upgrading an SR5 myself.

But when you have the childish attitude of “toyota rules, holden/ford sux” then what else can you expect than angry & irritated responses, and thats all he is there to do is get under our skin. Must have little to do with his time.

  41. Matty Lever says:

Putting an aftermarket blower on yourself is ridiculous because you have just ceased your vehicles warranty and if something goes wrong those few pennies you initially saved has just potentially cost you a fortune.

Secondly, what guarantee do you have that you will be able to achieve the same results and even if you what are the odds of maintaining the QDR (Quality, Dependability & Reliability) assurances that will be guaranteed from a specifically designed, engineered and tested TRD unit.

I suppose none of you people thought about this.

I also agree that Toyota make quality products and that TRD will make a good addition to the Toyota family in Australia. This new Tough Truck is sure to be the choice for many.

  42. Andrew M says:

    Glen,
    im totally with you mate.
i would take the SR5 over this anyday.
the TRD just looks too tacky.
the tray on the red version is sooo 1980’s with the rope hooks, and the black sports bar looks like a bar someone got their mate in the railways to bend up.

i would much rather the SR5 optioned with a chrome nudge/bullbar (bugger the tacky front TRD spoiler) and chrome rollbar.
and biggest of all I’d be able to then opt for the diesel engine as these jap V6’s absolutely chew the juice.

also the SR5 wheels look a lot more the part thanh these rims.

SR5 with bullbar and scrub bars and side steps with the diesel option over this anyday.
and my wallet would thank me too

  43. Crouchy says:

    power: very nice
exterior: very nice except for the tacky stripes.. should have been left behind.
wheels: terrible. Just not right at all.
interior: just plain ugly. steering wheel is tacky. not 60k worthy.

TRD are working hard at hitting new markets but i think they are trying too hard. this looks like they got an 8 year old to help design it.

“um… i want a red steering wheel…. and stripes…. and wheels like the ones on my matchbox…please dad?”

  44. realcars says:

right about the wheels and stripes. wouldn’t be surprised if your local toyota dealer asks more than the sticker price as they tend to.

  45. realcars says:

65 grand!!! tell em they are dreaming…………

  46. realcars says:

pity the sucker that pays 65k for one of these!!!

  47. Duck says:

TRD is already becoming broke becasue of the TURD Aurion. So why try ^THIS!

  48. That is an awesome truck. A 225kw supercharged Hilux has gotta be awesome, i gotta get myself one of these off-road rockets for sure.

Read a good article on goauto about this new beast from TRD and explains the pricing structure which makes perfect sense. Maybe some of these critics need to educated themselves before passing rot comments.

    GO TRD HILUX

  49. toyota tuff says:

realcars you are a wanker!!!!! trd is far from broke who do you think own’s trd, the most profitable car maker in the world “toyota” the trd brand will just grow as did hsv and fpv years ago, trd is still a pup! there are comments on this tread about holden and ford how great they are at r&d, how is it that toyota is easily outselling these two combined! trd will continue to grow and get stronger in australia and i would love to come back on this forum in 5 years time and see trd wipeing the grins off your beloved hsv & fpv faces as they have done with there entire range to holden and ford! trd will rule!

  50. toyota tuff says:

duck you are a bigger wanker!! one day when you are all grow up just maybe you will be able to afford a real car like a trd!
