Mercedes-Benz B-Class Five Star Safety Rating

December 5, 2006 by Alborz Fallah

We all know Mercedes-Benz make safe cars. They have always been the pioneers of safety technology, being the first to introduce many safety features including the Air-Bag and ABS. When Mercedes introduces a safety feature in their S-Class you are sure that other manufacturers will soon follow, so its no surprise to learn today that the B-Class from Mercedes has achieved a five star safety raing in latest ANCAP (Australasian New Car Assessment Program) crash test results.

Mercedes-Benz B-Class

We are extremely pleased that the inherent safety of the B-Class has again been recognised with this highest possible occupant rating of five stars,” said Horst von Sanden, managing director of Mercedes Car Group in Australia.

Our A-Class, B-Class, C-Class and E-Class all have the maximum five star rating for occupant protection from EURO NCAP and this latest test result recognises the primacy that safety plays at Mercedes-Benz,” he said.

The occupant star rating considers the injury measures to the occupants

  • head,
  • neck,
  • abdomen,
  • pelvis,
  • upper and lower legs
  • the deformation of the vehicles structure.

The star rating is assigned on the basis of crash test results from an offset and side impact crash and include any additional points awarded where advanced seatbelt reminders are fitted or a pole test is conducted.

To simplify the crash test results ANCAP has assigned an occupant protection rating based on an overall score, which is portrayed as a star rating out of five. The Mercedes-Benz B-Class is available with a range of engines and is priced from $44,900 for the B 180 CDI and B 200 and the B 200 Turbo from $48,900. The B-Class range is equipped with leading edge safety features including

  • ASR,
  • ABS,
  • ESP
  • five three-point seatbelts with all outboard seatbelts having emergency pre-tensioners.

Although I am not the biggest fan of the B-Class, for the price you really do get a lot! The B200 Turbo is an absolute cracker of a car with 142kW @ 5000rpm and 280Nm @ 1800rpm-4850rpm and a 0-100 sprint in just 7.6, the B200 really can go!
