SEAT IBX production version to be based on Audi Q3

SEAT has just be given the contract to build the new Audi Q3 at its Martorell plant in Spain. Word on the net is this could bring about the production of a road-going version of the SEAT IBX Concept, sharing the same platform.

According to a report by What Car? in the UK, the Spanish Volkswagen subsidiary will not only build the Audi but it will also build its own version of the small SUV. The model in question is slated to be a production version of the SEAT IBX Concept we first saw at the Geneva Motor Show earlier this year.

The IBX features a sporty two-door crossover layout and is the second SUV concept SEAT has produced, the first of which didn't make it to production. Details are kind of sketchy at this stage but reports say the new SEAT crossover could be built ready to enter markets as early as next year.

In concept form the SEAT IBX showcases hybrid technology, with the front wheels being powered by an electric motor, offering an electric-only range of around 45km. It's too early to tell if this powertrain will makeup apart of the lineup.

Reports say a range of small turbocharged petrol and diesel engines are more likely to power the production model, including the 1.4-litre and 1.6-litre TSI and TDI engines.

It's also unknown if the sporty two-door layout will make it to production, or whether a more conventional five-door layout will be developed. We'll keep you updated.
