Jeep Subcompact SUV mule spy photos

Aas part of Jeep's road to full recovery under the guidance of Fiat, the American company will expand its product lineup to include a Subcompact SUV.

Due in 2013, reports suggest it will be available as both front-wheel drive and four-whel drive and make use of Fiat's little engines (think: 1.4-litre Multiair petrol and 1.3-litre, 1.6-litre JTDm diesel engines).

These photos are of what we believe is the first mule for the subcompact SUV, which has been joint project between Jeep and Fiat.

The vehicle was spotted testing in Northern Sweden and if you're wondering why it looks so remarkably like a Fiat Qubo, you'd be relieved to know that it's simply a great way to hide its true looks under this shell to perform drivetrain and platform testing.

Jeep CEO Mike Manley has previously stated that the new Jeep will take inspiration from a Wrangler. Manely has also commented that the subcompact SUV will draw some styling from the Wrangler.

He recently told Autocar magazine “imagine a slightly softer and smaller updated version of the Wrangler's iconic grille and headlight design and you'll have a good idea of how its front end should look."

So who would buy a small Jeep SUV? Apparently the same bunch that would consider a Mini Countryman or Nissan Juke. Both Ford and General Motors are also working on subcompact SUVs at the moment.
