Suzuki Kizashi Apex and EcoCharge Concepts unveiled at New York show

Suzuki has unveil two new concepts at the New York International Auto Show in the US. Called the Suzuki Kizashi EcoCharge Concept and Suzuki Kizashi Apex Concept, they present technology catered for both the ec0-minded driver and the sporty, enthusiast driver.

The Suzuki Kizashi Apex Concept features a new turbocharged engine thanks to a Garrett ball-bearing turbo unit providing 8.5psi of puff. Definite power figures are yet to be released, however, the company has said it outputs somewhere around the 205-224kW mark.

The Apex Concept is also covered in sportsbike-style livery and features uprated, 245-section Yokohama S.Drive tyres mounted on new 19 inch alloy wheels, and a sporty two-tone black and blue interior layout.

Steve Younan, director of automotive marketing and product planning of American Suzuki Motor Corporation, recently announced,

"Our turbo-equipped concept leverages the already-exceptional Kizashi platform and infuses it with a substantial boost. The Kizashi Apex Concept will further elevate our flagship sedan in the US among enthusiasts who crave added power and performance."

Meanwhile, for the more frugal drivers out there, Suzuki has come up with a special fuel-sipping Kizashi EcoCharge which showcases an environmentally-friendly hybrid powertrain.

Under the bonnet of the EcoCharge sits a complex hybrid setup consisting of a 2.0-litre petrol four-cylinder engine, outputting 106kW and 173Nm, linked to a liquid-cooled 15kW electric motor powered by a 115 volt air-cooled lithium-ion battery pack.

Suzuki says the setup provides a reduced fuel consumption of up to 25 percent less than that of the normal Kizashi model. Mr Younan also spoke about the EcoCharge, saying,

"Our basic concept was to attain substantial gains in fuel economy without the traditional sacrifices in drivability required with today’s mid-size hybrid sedans. The Kizashi EcoCharge has the capability to deliver a 25 percent fuel economy gain in real-world driving while still retaining the Kizashi’s dynamic handling and braking advantages that make it a standout category performer."

This set of concepts seem to improve what was already quite a highly-rated model. Nice work Suzuki.
