Lamborghini Aventador LP 700-4

Lamborghini’s latest and greatest supercar, the stunning Aventador LP 700-4 was the main attraction in the nation’s capital Rome yesterday, to promote the “Made in Italy” campaign.

It also happens to be the 150th Anniversary of Italy’s unification and Lamborghini chose Rome as the main stage to present the Aventador to an international audience.

Like the Gallardo and the Murcielago before it, the Aventador is almost guaranteed to be a success. Orders for the car have already taken out the first twelve months of production, and with such stellar performance and looks to match we think the waiting time will blow out even further.

In the tradition of the fabulous Miura, Countach, Diablo and Murcielago, the Aventador LP 700-4 is a proper super sports car complete with a powerful twelve-cylinder powerplant with a 6.5 litre displacement. It’s also Lamborghini’s fastest and most advanced creation yet, with 515 kW (700 hp) and 690 Nm of torque.

Top speed is a whopping 350km/h (217 mph) and the Aventador can sprint from 0-100km/h in a jet like 2.9 seconds.

It’s all about advanced body design and weight reduction with this latest Lamborghini and to some extent lays down the ground rules for all supercars from this time on.

It’s a car of large proportions (4.78 metres in length & 2.26 metres wide) but has a dry weight on only 1575 kilograms. When mated to a powerful twelve-cylinder engine, the Aventador LP 700-4 is a recipe for some serious high-speed performance.

CO2 emissions are also down by 20 percent, despite the 8 percent increase in overall power.

Of particular interest is the ISR transmission, which provides a rapid-fire shift time of just 50 milliseconds, which should provide an F1 kind of experience, with a soundtrack to match.

Handling is also said to rival the car’s performance characteristics with a pushrod suspension set up that will provide competition-level precision.

“With the Aventador LP 700-4, the future of the super sports car is now part of the present. Its exceptional package of innovative technologies is unique, its performance simply overwhelming,” says Stephan Winkelmann, President and CEO of Automobili Lamborghini.

“The Aventador is a jump of two generations in terms of design and technology, it’s the result of an entirely new project, but at the same time it’s a direct and consistent continuation of
Lamborghini’s brand values. It is extreme in its design and its performance, uncompromising in its standards and technology, and unmistakably Italian in its style and perfection. Overall, the dynamics and technical excellence of the Aventador LP 700-4 makes it unrivalled in the worldwide super sports car
arena.”

The Aventador is a virtual study in the use of exotic materials in automotive construction, with a full carbon-fibre monocoque (that’s the tub and roof), which weighs just 147.5 kilograms. Combined with the aluminium front and rear frames, the entire spaceframe boasts an extreme level of torsional rigidity (35,000 Newton-metres per degree) and weighing only 229.5 kilos.

The large displacement V12 will rev out to 8250 rpm and its 690 Nm will ensure plenty of pulling power from any speed.
The ISR (Independent Shifting Rods) transmission is said to be not only the world’s fastest robotized gearbox, but also offers drivers the world’s most emotional gear shift.

To help put this much grunt down on the tarmac is the Aventador’s permanent all-wheel drive. The system uses electronically controlled Haldex coupling front-to-rear torque distribution to match the car’s dynamics at any given time.

Drivers can select between Strada (road), Sport and Corsa (track), which alters the settings for engine, transmission, differential, steering an dynamic control.

CarAdvice will be able to bring you a full test drive (on track) of the Aventador LP 700-4 in due course.
