2012 Shelby GT500 Super Snake to debut at New York

Ford tuning specialist Shelby will unveil the new 2012 model year Shelby GT500 Super Snake at the upcoming 2011 New York International Auto Show later this month. The car features vast mechanical revisions over the standard Ford Mustang which it is based on, and will boast extreme engine performance figures of 597kW.

The Super Snake is the cream of the crop in Shelby's line-up, it's the most brutal Mustang the company offers. And with the new model, as expected, there's even more brutality on offer. The 5.4-litre V8 under the bonnet is relatively small, especially when it's attached to such colossal power figures - 597kW is about equivalent to the power of three Holden Commodores put together. This means it'll be fast.

No specific acceleration figures have been announced yet as we're sure those we'll be kept as a surprise for the New York show, but speculation suggests the new model should be able to smash the old quarter-mile sprint in the 11 second bracket - the previous 2010MY Super Snake managed it in 12.0.

Other details that have been revealed include the addition of new Alcoa 2- inch alloy wheels wrapped in performance tyres, adjustable coilover suspension with Eibach stabiliser bars, a Borla exhaust system and a fibreglass bonnet for reduced weight.

Look out for more information on this and our full New York Auto Show coverage towards the end of this month. The show runs from April 21 through until May 1.
