Most stolen cars of 2010: UK report

According to a recent investigation by stolen vehicle recovery systems manufacturer Tracker in Britain, the most stolen vehicle of 2010 was the BMW X5. This is the second year running this particular research has found the X5 to be the most stolen vehicle of the year.

It seems car thieves are more interested in taking luxury SUVs for joy rides over the more typical sports car, as Range Rover was found to be the second-most stolen car of last year. It's not all luxury SUVs though.

Taking up third spot as the most stolen car of the 2010 list was the popular BMW M3 closely followed by one of its main rivals, the Audi RS4 - strangely, the Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG is not even in the top ten. Thieves were also interested in the Audi TT sports car, which just made it into the top five.

As for Mercedes-Benz vehicles overall, the SL and CLK made up sixth and seventh most stolen while the other main rival to the BMW X5, the Mercedes-Benz ML rounded out the top 10. Porsche purists also suffered the effects of car theft, with the 911 recorded as the eighth most stolen car of 2010.

So which vehicle came in as the ninth most stolen car of 2010? The humble Volkswagen Golf. Statistics haven't revealed which particular variants of the Golf were most popular, but we'd say the sporty GTI probably made up the majority.
