Holden Barina-based SUV spy photos

By Alborz Fallah |

The trend to have a small SUV seems to be catching on with both Ford and General Motors set to release miniture SUVs in the near future.

Ford will base its sub-compact SUV on the Fiesta platform while General Motors will build its around the Chevrolet Sonic platform (Holden Barina as it’s known here).

These spy photos were taken in Northern Sweden and show that testing is well underway. Sources suggest we will see the production-ready version next year.

The little SUV is being developed and engineered by General Motors’ operations in Korea, the same folks who designed the current Holden Cruze sedan.

Will it come to Australia? There has been no official confirmation but we suspect it will make its way Down Under given the potential market.
The Holden Barina SUV, as we call it internally, is likely to get a new name when and if it goes on sale in Australia. It will sit below the Holden Captiva and benefit from a range of petrol and diesel engines.

Those disks look huge on the front.

    • Azzaa

look big, but that’s because the wheels are very small.

It’ll be interesting to see if GMK (nee GM Daewoo) can come up with something decent……

what price range will this fit in? For already has the kuga and they are developing an even smaller suv, so is this supposed to be up against the kuga or what ford is making and if it is where does it fit for price if it came to aus??

Sorry, didn’t read the article properly…

I like it and i really want it NOW, it will probably be a 20-30 year old car type thing!!

I dont get the point of a really small SUV, is it just a marketing thing so people can say they own an “SUV”??

The point of an SUV for me is space with versatility. I dont know how smaller versions could offer either of those things.

I assume it will be priced at the ASX…28K-ish? The things people will buy for the W*nk factor

The point of an SUV is big car space (5 adults) but small car economy. (total cost of ownership)

Its a shame that most SUV’s dont offer more space and better economy.

How about better braking and better handling – they could never offer that?

More space, power and handling than….what?
