Video: BMW M3 ute April Fools’ Day joke

By Brett Davis |

It appears Ze Germans have a sense of humour after all. Remember the BMW M3 ute that was spotted on the Nurburgring last week? The company has done some explaining since then and says the car was simply created as ‘Aprilscherz’ – an April Fools’ joke.

BMW thought if it produced a one-off M3 ute, wrapped it in some camouflaging and toured the Nurburgring, spy photographers would think it’s going to be an upcoming production car. Well, it sort of worked. BMW’s head of communications, Dirk Arnold, said in a recent report,

“Ah, yes, everyone’s been talking about that pick-up. But, no, this is… how you call it, an April Fools’ Joke.”

He quickly confirmed that such a model would never enter the market.

“It is hugely doubtful that BMW will ever during our lives produce such a vehicle, in any segment.”

A video of the M3 ute has since been posted up onto YouTube showing some more close-ups of the car, and by the sounds of it, there’s definitely an M3 under that body. Take a look.

    Stuart Applebys is better.

    • JML

I beg to differ. Appleby turned his M3 into what looks like a Commodore ute, not an M3 ute.

      • Tael

        Appleby’s is an e39 M5.

  • Sam 300TD

So what’s the date in Germany? I’m confused.

  • Shak

Umm, i dont have a calendar in front of me, but im quite sure Aril 1st isnt for a while now. Seems, Ze Chermans HAVE a sense of humour, it just isnt very well developed or indeed funny.

Sorry if i offended you in any way, but their is a wide held joke in the automotive industry and between automotive enthusiasts, that the Germans dont have a sense of humour due to the clinical nature in which their engineering is executed. Very cool calm and collected, nothing “fun” per se. Sorry if you didn’t get it.

Didn’t some sportsman convert an M5 to a ute a few years ago? Someone mentioned Stuart Appleby above, but I thought it was a car or bike racer like Mick Doohan. Can anyone confirm who it was?

  • trippyfoo

Yup, it was Appleby- prev generation svelte looking M5 -

    • Don Quay

Thanks. I recall now reading about it in Motor magazine (I think) and the reactions he got from it were priceless. So, this M3 version must be the Germans pinching a bit of Australian ingenuity.

  • trippyfoo

Designed and fabricated near his hometown.

Another succesful meeting of Germans and comedy…

    :-/

Is it just me, or does that sound supercharged?

  • Old Dog

As they say; in comedy, timing is everything.
