Porsche takes over Volkswagen

March 7, 2008 by Alborz Fallah

Although not exactly surprising news, German manufacturer Porsche yesterday announced that it will increase its 31 per cent voting stake in Volkswagen to a majority.

Volkswagen & Porsche

Porsche, best known for making practical supercars such as the 911, has long been expected to gain control, following the decision handed down by Europe’s highest court last year which struck down a German law that limited individual shareholders’ voting rights in VW.

On Monday Porsche’s supervisory body authorised the action which will cost an estimated 10 billion euros ($16.5 billion) in investment. There are currently no plans to merge the two manufacturers.

Our aim is to create one of the strongest and most innovative automobile alliances in the world, which is able to measure up to the increased international competition,” Porsche CEO Wendelin Wiedeking said.

The deal may help Volkswagen as it recently announced its intentions to take on Toyota to become the world’s biggest manufacturer.

Porsche’s controlling stake in Volkswagen now puts the company in charge of Volkswagen, Audi, Bugatti, Lamborghini, Skoda, Seat and many more.

  4. NO NAME…….LOL you are working out TP. He only has kaleidescope vision for TOYOTA!

  5. Lcat says:

Took a while……. but in the long run maybe it isn’t Toyota they should worry about (sorry TP)

  6. Bavarian Missile says:

He told you what No Name…..so does a Porsche have curtain airbags? hahaha Who cares!

    Love my 911s……..

  7. James F says:

No name – its not just about straight line speed – else the Americans would be the biggest players in the car world instead of the Europeans.

    Its HANDLING and build… EXPERIENCE…

How can anyone in their right mind even for a second think an Aurion is a better car than the GT3.. Come on!! lets get real..

  8. Elitist says:

    Keep Germans for Germany…
Porsche is the perfect model to run a business, quality cars, seek perfection, not mass produced.

  9. dlr1 says:

Is Toyota boring because the sell so many or do the sell so many because they’re boring ???

Are Golfs and Passats as boring to the Germans as a Falcon Xt or Commodore Omegas are here?

Perhaps many of the germans are considered exotic here because of their price and numbers sold but over there an E class is also a taxi.

  10. Tachyon says:

Isn’t ironic that Porsche, founded by the son of Ferdinand Porsche (The founder of VW) would one day take over VW. And why is everyone talking about Toyota’s on this forum? Anyway, just to cleat something up for you Dlr1, Toyota’s are boring because they have uninspiring engine’s, exterior/interior design, and are as fun to drive as reading the Bible.

  11. f1worldchamp says:

Toyota’s are the motoring worlds equivalent of whitegoods. Every Toyota I see I think it’s owner is either A) driving a company car; or B) spent as much time deciding which car to buy as I did deciding which washing machine to buy.
You can TRD all you like, but they a lieka fridge with an automatic ice dispenser. ‘Oooh ahhh’ when you first see it then you wonder why.

  12. f1worldchamp says:

Sorry, this is a VW-Porsche thread.
Being of Italian background, Porsche owning Lambo just doesn’t sit well with me.

  13. golfschwein says:

DlR1, I read once (who was it? Peter Robinson? LJK Setright?) that the very things that make Mercedes Benzes good luxury cars are the same things that make them good taxis.

The reverse would also be true.

  14. No Name says:

Sorry it was me who started to Toybota bit. Just gettin at TP.

This only makes good economic sense, but the real reason is under new european legislation manufacturers have to have an average CO2 output of something like 150g/km by year 2012 or some other date (can;t remember). Porcshe are unable to achieve this in their own rights without VW, hence they are going to produce hybrids like the panamera and cayenne!

Can a Aurion really outsprint a Veyron TP.

  15. WHO WOULD SAY THIS….the Aurion can do 0-100 in 1.7secs, does 2.178litres/100 and will do more if you change the tyres to even skinnier ones.

Veyron and Shelby lookout – the TP AURION with skinnier tyres is here!

  16. Elitist says:

    F1worldchamp-
I agree but we need to understand the Germans finally did something that was missing since the early 70’s…Stability.

When the Americans & Malayians had it, they were in constant financial trouble.
But then again it maybe coincidence as the 80’s-90s werent friendly to supercar purchases. Bad financial times.

As long as one model, the Murcilago does not share audi parts this will be fine.

  17. Elitist says:

When you think about it Porsche now owns-

    Bently (zzz)
    Bugatti (!!!)
    Lamborghini (!!)

  18. Wheelnut says:
