2011 Suzuki SX4 now standard with six airbags, ESC

By Tim Beissmann |

Suzuki Australia has expanded the safety of its 2011 Suzuki SX4 small car with side and curtain airbags now standard on the entry-level model.

The safety upgrade means the entire SX4 range now comes standard with six airbags and electronic stability control (ESC).

Despite the extra equipment, the price of the entry-level Suzuki SX4 is unchanged at $20,490 plus on-road costs.

The SX4 is Suzuki Australia’s only official entrant in the small car segment according to VFACTS, with the Swift and the Alto both occupying the light segment.

The SX4 accounted for 1.0 percent of the small car segment in 2010, and so far in 2011 it has slipped marginally to a 0.9 percent share, with 274 total sales.

The safety enhancements apply to all body shapes and vehicle platforms, including sedan and hatch, and front- and all-wheel drive models.

The announcement follows last month’s news that the Suzuki Swift and Kizashi are now five-star safety rated by ANCAP, thanks to their adoption of seven airbags and ESC.

The Suzuki Jimny Sierra and the APV minivan are the only vehicles in Suzuki Australia’s range not to offer six airbags or ESC as standard.

Both vehicles come with only two airbags for the driver and passenger.

    yeah I drove a 6sp manual S series sedan for a while
and thought is was a great small car, with heaps of features in the S series and handled well, much better to drive than some of the other small cars out there!

The top-spec hatch looks great! it’s a shame the SX4 is overlooked, especially by younger car buyers. When you think about it though, besides some new Chinese entrants and a few old Daewoo’s, it’s pretty difficult to buy an awful brand new car these days.

i have to say it is disapointing to see that this car hasn’t taken off in sales having test driven the 2010 version i have to say its over all feel was above any of its competitors, although its appearence in sedan model is a select taste i found it to my liking and the reviews i see of its fuel efficiency and reliability tell me its not the car that needs to looked at for problems but the advertising, spend money to make money guys! advertise it. i know alot of people who still ask me “isnt the swift their only mid sized car?” when i bring this model up in conversation.
