Renault R-Space concept unveiled at Geneva

Renault has unveiled its new Renault R-Space concept at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show. We first saw this car while it was undergoing an official photoshoot leading up to the international show debut, but now we see it in full detail.

The Renault R-Space presents traditional mad-French design, not just with the exterior but also inside the car. The entire concept was headed by Laurens van den Acker and features an extremely unusual interior design in particular.

The Renault R-Space was created to prove MPVs needn't be so boring, Renault designed the car to break through the confines of typical MPV layouts. It may not look like an MPV but the R-Space uses a genuine five-door platform, incorporating reverse-opening rear doors and an almost infinitely adjustable rear compartment layout.

It does looks confusing, the rear section of the interior, but it's actually pretty straight forward. Each of those blocks can be electronically raised and made to configure almost any shape or layout, including rear passenger seats, a table or arranged as a kids play area - although this layout can only be chosen when the car is stationary.

Other interesting features of the Renault R-Space include a 900cc engine that develops a rather punchy 82kW of power and 160Nm of torque. This petrol unit also provides a claimed fuel consumption rating of just 3.7L/100km and emits just 95gm of CO2 per kilometre, partly thanks to an Efficient Dual Clutch transmission.

Axel Breun, Director of Design for Concept and Show Cars, explained the philosophy of the R-Space upon the car's unveiling, saying,

"Renault R-Space brings together qualities long considered opposed: family, functionality, sportiness and sensuality. It answers the expectations of a large slice of our modern society."
