Melbourne Motor Show: Volkswagen stand
February 29, 2008 by Matt Brogan
Volkswagen have released their new Tiguan & R Series models (R32 Golf, R36 Passat & R50 Touareg) at this year’s show and the strength of VW as a world leader is kind of obvious when you enter the stand.
Not only is their a wide variety of vehicles on show, there’s interactive displays, option and accessory booths, and handfuls of helpful, smiling staff on hand for all your VW questions. The run-out Golf ‘Edition’ and ‘Pacific’ models are also on show.

Any shots of the Golf Pacific & Edition models ?
I am a convert to Volkswagen. After owning several Holden’s these cars are brilliant. Them and most cars from Japan. Let’s get rid of Holden and Ford
Pity they didn’t give Melbourne this exclusive:
VW will unveil a new diesel-electric version of the Golf at next month’s Geneva Motor Show.
“Set to be the most efficient and cost-effective model in the line-up, the Golf will return an incredible 83.1mpg and emit only 89g/km of CO2.” (autoexpress)

well I 2nd that but I have owned several Fords and definitely agree these cars are brilliant and as far as lets get rid of Holden and Ford, I think they will look after themselves in that department
AW – If Ford Holden and Toyota do leave Oz there will be at least 10;000 direct job losses of those who work on the production/assembly lines.
Not to mention the subsequent; additional job losses in the automotive industry from local part suppliers mechanics etc.
Then there will also be job losses in other industries such as Building; Retail; Banking; Hospitality and Tourism because those who used to work at Holden and Ford can no longer af-Ford to buy a new home; furniture electrical goods or go on holiday etc.
As a result there will be an increase in the demand for welfare and social security services which will mean the Gummint will have to increase Centrelinks budget.. as a result they will increase the taxes etc on those who are still lucky enough to have a job which could infact make it harder for them to buy hings and go places as well..
So if you are prepared for increased taxes an economy running at half of what it is now and a lower standard of living then Fine..
it just shows that you like a number of other aussies with the same attitude don’t realise How important the Local Car industry [Ford and Holden] are to Australia and the impact that their disappearance will have on the economy
Too many people think that “well I don’t work in the Auto industry so if they leave I won’t be agffected; I’ll be okay”
Yet the economy is like a finely balanced eco system and what happens in one area has a substantial flow on effect further down the line
And don’t think for one minute that If ford and Holden do leave that the imported cars will become cheaper.. The likes of Subi BMW etc will take advantage of it and most liely increase prices. We will be at their mercy as we will have no other option but to accept what ever they do
At least Ford and Holden give us a quality car at a relatively affordable price.. Sure they mightn’t be of the standard as say VW but they are built to withstand our harsh environment etc.
Is there anything to see at VW stand for new Golf buyers? Are Edition and Pacific Golfs on show – and are they any different to Trendline and Comfortline (aside from perhaps MP3 compatability)? And when will these go on sale, do we know?
Oh, and why does the article say ‘run-out’ Edition adn Pacific, I thought Trendline/Comfortline were runout, replaced by full-price, new Edition and Pacific?
Ford wont leave Oz, just import like the other 48 brands on our market.
Holden and Toyota have a very good future here, if not for local consumption then at least just for export.
A “connected” guy once said that only 2 will continue to manufacture in Oz, this is coming true. How long before Ford pull the pin?
Cheers

The Tiguan left me a bit underwhelmed, especially when they confirmed there will not be a road and track version coming, and the diesel will be the old one not the 125kw new one.
The Golf GTis were still special even though not really new, and the R series cars were very blue :)
I still love the Touareg. Bit of a shame if you buy the V10, as the interior looks no different to the “poverty” V6 packs – but that, of course, is where the similarity ends.
The Tiguan actually left me impressed. The modern design in and out, the huge panoramic sunroof, the feel of the switch gear and materials. The self parking thing is a bit weird though.
The Golf is starting to look a left behind compared to the Eos and Tiguan so I guess the update is due.
I thought the German rep on the floor was a nice touch.
Why do some people want to get rid of holden and ford don’t thay know which country thay live in.Ford and Holden are part of austrilian car culture with much more history in this country than any european or japanese car makers. If people dont like Ford or Holden maybe thay should piss off to a contry that dont sell them.
Agree with you there Phill. But please do us all a favour and learn to spell. AW seems to be against aussie cars. He’s said a lot of other things about Aussie cars.
Hey, that Liam is not me?! :P
Whichever Liam felt the Golf is due for its upgrade, shown up by the progressive Eos and co, would you mind telling me – are the Edition and Pacific ANY different to the Trendline and Comfortline? I thought there may be some minor facelift given the release of M VI is a while off – in Aus, at least?
Where was the Passat CC, one of VW’s most exciting models in years. It’s supposed to be on sale here after mid year.
Smoov – Its not been officially unveiled, that’ll happen in Euroland shortly
I have a vw pacific on order, and want to know if there are any upgrades to this model….Greg
Greg, you ordered a car without knowing its specs? In addition to features in the outgoing ‘Comfortline’, you will get sports seats, ESP, body coloured bumpers/handles, climate control, ‘Pacific’ badging… can’t remember if that’s the lot, but it’s definitely a good deal, being the same price as Comfortline. I am looking to order the Edition (replacing Trendline, but with most features of old Comfortline), but am worried about buying a to-be-superseded model. What do you think? Will the VI Golf late next year be all that different? Bec
For the love of god…..has anyone even seen a Pacific or Edition yet? I have been holding out and was just about to order a comfortline when the dealer said I should wait for the pacific. I have been to 3 different dealerships and googled the hell out of it and can’t find a single one.
pacific and editions are not in dealers yet they will be released next week. Volkswagen dealers should be able to give you info, where are you in oz?
I contacted Chatswood Classic Cars and was told they have have already sold numerous Pacific Golf Models, but if you order one now you wont receive it until late September depending on your specific requirements.
I want the GTI red (which is not extra) with sunroof, sat nav, bumper bars and side strip color match in addition to the standard features. The Pacific is meant to come with many more features (standard) than the Comfortline offers and for less money. (including 17 inch alloy wheels which I have seen and quite pleased with)
I have a photocopied sheet stating that the recommended retail value of the Pacific was 27.9 but I just looked and its now 32.4+. Not impressed.
Because I have done my homework on the Golf I know it will be worth the wait, but if nothing else, I would like to know if the car looks/feels different and even the dealerships are very hush hush about it. It seems a bit silly now.
All I know is that it has the ride height of a GT Sport, new wheels and a Pacific badge. Any additional information would be very much appreciated.
I am in Sydney
A sold car doesn’t mean it is a car that is also delivered. We have purchased a pacific model and can’t get it until the offical release in april.
The prices haven’t changed from the comfortline and trendline prices. The cars look that same as the other cars apart from larger wheels and coloured coded bumpers and strips.
you also get esp, the plus computer, dual zone a/c and the sports seat from the gt models with trim. MK 6 not released until sept in europe so late 2009 maybe here. But i’ve had the car on order for 2 months now and i can’t wait ( car details release in dec 07)
Details are now on the Volkswagen Australia website
Hi Folks
I took delivery of my new Golf Pacific last night. It’s a magic little car. The new interior is great and has more of a quality feel than the Comfortline. I’m really happy that I made the decision to upgrade from my 2005 Comfortline.
These cars just keep better…
