Feast your eyes on the most popular Mercedes-Benz C 63 AMG on the planet, and it’s absolutely not for sale, at any price.
That’s despite the multiple offers from well-heeled enthusiasts desperate to own this one off AMG hot rod. One such chap even presented a blank cheque to the PR department, and wanted to know what number he needed to put down to own the car.
Affectionately know as “Jaffa” for patently obvious reasons, this was the car that launched AMG’s ‘Performance Pack” in Australia at the Sydney Motor Show last year.
As a public relations exercise it’s been a big success, with no less than 30 percent of all C 63 sedans and estates ordered with the ‘Performance Pack’.
If you’re after the actual paint colour it’s known as Designo pearl orange metallic, and if it were available as an option on the AMG paint chart, there would be a lot more Jaffas on the road these days.
With an extra 22 kW, greater stopping power and features such as a carbon fibre boot lip and an exquisite AMG designed nappa leather/Alcantara steering wheel.
Power jumps from 336 kW to 358 kW, which results in a 4.4 second sprint from 0-100km/h, while torque is unchanged at a healthy 600 Nm.
The additional performance and quicker engine response are thanks to a combination of forged pistons from the sensational SLS AMG supercar, and a three-kilogram weight saving from the connecting rods and lightweight crankshaft.
AMG has always understood braking better than most, and the system on board the C 63 is proof of that. The brake rotors up front are a composite design, and the brake bowl is all aluminium, which reduces temperature peaks, for more reliable stopping power in high load conditions.
That said the most obvious attraction to this bespoke car is the colour alone, and we can only hope that the Australian “Jaffa” might inspire a worldwide limited edition run by AMG.
