Peugeot 308 HDi fuel efficiency record
February 27, 2008 by George Skentzos
Peugeot has set an unofficial Guiness World Record for fuel economy, driving its newly released 308 HDi to victory in a 14,580km trek around Australia.
Narrowly surpassing the Hyundai i30 CRDi which previously achieved an average of 3.2-litres per 100km, John and Helen Taylor driving the Peugeot 308 HDi managed a slightly more efficient 3.13-litres per 100km across a 25 Day Round Australia Trip.
This also breaks the previous official record held by the Peugeot 307 which managed an average of 3.49-litres per 100km.
Over the 14,580km journey, the 308 HDi needed only 7.59 tanks or 453.94 litres of diesel in total, costing a mere $703.93.
Its best tank achieved 1988km from 58.98 litres, with the average falling slightly below this mark at 1919km.
The 308 was also fitted with Michelin Energy XM1+ Tyres, which offer a lower rolling resistance via innovative technology that actually reduces fuel consumption.
The specific model used in the record attempt was a 308 XS HDi manual which has an RRP of $29,990. Featuring a 1.6 litre turbo-diesel engine, it produces 80kW of power and 240Nm of torque.

Philip, perhaps the reduced pollution that comes out of the exhaust.
But if you looking fully on effeciency then I wouldnt see any reason that you should!
Some of the other tricks that the Taylors use to conserve fuel:
1. Put the left wheel onto the white line on the edge of the road, as the smoother surface saves some fuel.
2. Disengage the clutch on long downhill stretches.
I tried these and a few others things that have already been mentioned like 38psi in the tyres, and I managed to get 5.2l/100km in a fully loaded Honda Jazz from Sydney to Melbourne, and I drove to the speed limit (110kph most of the way), not at 80kph.
Good fuel economy but Pug can be problematic ..to see what I mean please check this site ..ihatemycar dot com dot au
No Name,
mate i agree that fuel figures should be shown separetly for urban and H’wy driving.
the only figures that split them up that i have seen is for an LPG 4sp falcon.
they give it 9L/100k on HWY and 16L/100k for city for a combined total and official figure of 15.9L/100k.
dont ask me how that works but thats what it is.
TP,
a falcon is just as fuel efficient as the smaller engined “game changing” aurion dont forget
“the aurion does 0-100 in 15.3 secs” – ANDREW M…what did you mean with this when you told me. Is that the quarter mile?
TuRD Aurion offer ends today. Apparently u get a free one if your arms aren’t dislocated after a spin around the block!
No bites… the Toyota Lovers must be pressing their cardigans.
The 308 is tagged as the gay car of the year.. Stay away hetero family types, it’s gay as gay can be!
Gay Review you really are a ponsie slackarsed w*anker.

Hey Gayreview most of the gays I know have got pretty good taste when it comes to cars!
NM,
that statement was designed to “flag” TP’s attention to questions he quite easily seems to miss
