2011 Morgan Threewheeler on sale in the UK

The iconic Morgan Threewheeler has been reborn for the 21st century – and not merely as a nostalgic concept either. A price tag of just £25,000 ($40,000) has already been attached to it for UK buyers.

The Threewheeler is a nod to the past for Morgan. The British motor car manufacturer was founded in 1909 and built only three-wheelers from inception until the launch of the 4-4 in 1936. It continued to build three-wheeled vehicles until 1952.

The 2011 Threewheeler is set to do the famous design no injustice.

It will be powered by an 86kW S&S V-twin engine teamed with a five-speed manual transmission from Mazda. A V-belt directs power to the rear wheel, which is wrapped in a reinforced tyre.

Although Morgan is yet to reveal performance data, with a weight of less than 500kg it is understood the Threewheeler will accelerate from 0-100km/h in around 4.5 seconds and have a top speed of 185km/h. Morgan says the vehicle’s low centre of gravity means it feels glued to the road at all times.

The bullet-shaped Threewheeler was designed to look and feel as much like an aeroplane as possible. It’s fair to say Morgan got the exterior spot on, especially with the air force-inspired paint and decals. The interior features a leather cockpit with room for two and aircraft instruments on the dashboard.

It’s designed to sound like an old warplane too, with a “bomb release starter”, where the twin cylinders make a detonation sound at start-up.

Morgan says the Threewheeler is all about bringing the fun and passion back to personal transport.

It asks the question: ‘When did you last regard a journey by motor car as an adventure?’

Morgan simply answers it: ‘The time is right for Morgan to launch the Threewheeler’.
