Melbourne Motor Show: Audi Cross Coupe

By Matt Brogan |

Audi is well known for their stellar line-ups at International Motor Shows and Melbourne is no exception.

Melbourne Motor Show: Audi Cross Coupe

Featuring the Cross Coupe Quattro concept, new RS6 Avant, TTS Coupe, and elegant A3 Cabriolet models, the Audi stand is well in line with the company’s brand value of sporty, progressive and sophisticated examples of modern motoring.

Audi’s first-time concept car the Audi Cross Coupe aims to give show-goers a taste of the future of compact SUV models from the German luxury car maker. Finished in ‘Liquid Silver’ its silhouette is classic Audi and with 20″ rims that extra ground clearance for off-road jaunts is assured.

Audi’s managing director, Joerg Hofmann, says the company remains focussed on strong market growth and the introduction of these key new cars, plus all-important models such as the new A4 and R8 which would further boost the brand’s image and sales in 2008.

“New product is a key strength of the Audi brand and the onslaught of new models arriving in Australia this year will cement our reputation as an innovator and a brand focussed on sporty performance. The unbeatable performance of the new RS6 Avant for example, combined with the elegant A3 Cabriolet mean that Audi is once again offering a diverse choice for luxury car buyers.”

“Adding the all new A4 and TTS Coupe and Roadster to these key niche models will ensure Audi is always top-of-mind for discerning buyers. I am confident that each new model will be in high demand following their respective Australian introductions,” Mr Hofmann said.

Rounding out the impressive array of Australian premiere performances will be the A3 Sportback, sporty S3, S5, and S8 range-topping variants, the new A6 2.8 Le Mans edition, all-terrain A6 Allroad Quattro, high-performance Q7 4.2 TDI, popular TT Roadster and the stunning R8 sports coupe.

If we really must have this category of vehicle foisted upon us, this is a much more elegant example than BMW’s dreadful X6.

I think this category of vehicle give us the “worst of both worlds”. You get the ungainly looks and higher centre of gravity of the SUV coupled with the relative lack of space and utility that a sedan provides compared to a wagon.

The concept didn’t work with the mid 1990′s Suzuki X90 “off road coupe” and doesnt work now with an offroad sedan. Not even with a BMW or Audi badge.

Even though I’m not a fan of FWDs.. I actually prefer the BMW X6 as this just looks like a “Jacked-Up” A3
