V8 Supercar plays Waltzing Matilda

February 23, 2008 by George Skentzos

By now most of you have come across a video of a Formula One engine playing some type of tune through an array of computers, software and wires. This is the Australian edition where V8 Supercar driver James Courtney plays Waltzing Matilda with the throttle alone!

Tom grow up mate, this site doesn’t need anymore wankers like yourself.

Ford and Holden are both owned by American car manufacturers and if you took the time to do a little research you would quickly realise the Falcon has way more Aussie made parts than the Commodore.

I love Holden’s mate but even I can accept reality.

    6. Tom….you carry on like a porkchop and a lurch, so please get your hand off your tool for you carry on like a fool!

Sure Skaife did had smome mechanical – suspension] problems whivch effectively put an end to his race..
However; at least he did manage to actually finish the race. Whereas you managed to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory by once again becoming impatient and bumping those infront of you out of the way and causing an accident – could it be you have lost the ability to affect a clean skillful passing manouvre?

I was at the track surrounded by Forfd fans and even they cheered when you got taken out as a result of your ego

    24. Vote -1 Vote +1Richo
      says:

Wheelnut – your right mate, lowndes ego is really starting to get the better of him. You can trace a number of stupid incidents over the past two seasons which have ultimately cost craig the championship and they where 100% his own fault. Ford fans like going on about the Rick Kelly incident in 06, but the fact of the matter is craig threw that championship away in the rounds leading up to the final, he had a huge lead in the championship and he threw it all away.

Those passes Craig was doing today down in turn 9, first on Winterbottom and then on Holdsworth, they may have been technically legal, but they where dirty and thats fact. You can just go jumping down the inside of someone, knowing full well that you won’t be able to stop in time, use the other car to get yourself around the corner meaning the craig gets the position and both winterbottom and holdsworth where shuffled back. Totally unfair and bullshit racing. then he tried to do it to courtney who has a well documented history of having brain explosions and so what happens? He pisses courtney off by doing it to him and courtney has said brain explosion and have a big accident and poor winterbottom gets taken out through no fault of his own.

Then you get that idiot Roland Dane coming on TV saying that Courtney should have just gotten out of the way because craig was going a bit faster at the time.. umm roland, ITS CALLED RACING NOT QUALIFYING! As if a driver is ever going to give up second place in a race just because the guy behind is .1 of a second a lap faster… as if! Just shows the attitude of craig and roland, they make a good combo. Whincup is too good for that team!

    25. Mate, james courtney bumped me as we wer battling for 2nd,and mark did ok but said i hope he crashes again anyway our team won so sucked in holden,oh and happy birthday to russel ingall 44,out on the 2nd lap.The boys did a good job with the cars this year and its lookin good for the season.Craig Lowndes team 888 vodafone.

Carig you bumped into his rear bumper goingin into turn 9 which pushed him wide and made his exit wider than normal and tours just a little bit tighter

Then as you both approached the kink inbetween 9-10 you moved over to cut the apex and given JCs altered approach angel you once agian made contact with this front bumper as.

You weren’t really infromt of him because after the first hit at turn 9 JC had the ablilty and the reaction time to back maintain control an momentum and stayed right along side

Your not fooling anyone “Craig” get a bloody life, let me guess your probably about 16 thinking your the coolest ever? wanker…

    28. Yeah look, with the rules at the moment your allowed to bump other cars off the track and until the rules are changed, your going to see alot more of that. The boys are celebrating and im still smiling and happy the team won.cheers Craig Lowndes 888.

      says:

what? you cant cant bump others off the track?
well someone better tell Morris who has been doing it for years.

      but seriously…….
as you said Richo, its racing!!!
who the hell is going to sit tied up behind a car that is obviously slower then them with out having a go??
james sure did his fair share of barging so he cant really whinge.

if a pass “is technically legal” as you put it then it is called “racing hard”

the standard was set on saturday for what was acceptable so i dont think any of the drivers could be to blame as all the barging that went on was “technically legal”.

oh and when you have a much faster car behind you and you dont get out of the way its technically called “blocking”

    34. Vote -1 Vote +1Richo
      says:

Andrew, where did i say that what jamie did on saturday was an acceptable overtaking move? Mate everyone up and down pit lane was outraged by that decision, did you notice how only the two 888 drivers where the ones doing moves like that? says something about the mentality of the team.

It can be legal all it wants, but that doesn’t make it good racing. Brock and Johnson use to race each other “hard” like you say, yet they never touched each other, never put each other off the track. Why? cos they had something called respct. Respect for each other, respect for their cars and importantly, respect for their team which have to repair the cars if you crash them. Thats something the lowndes and alot of the other “top” drivers lack these days and its to the discredit of the sport

theres a difference between “racing hard” as you say, and blatently pushing other cars off the track. Any old idiot can push another car off the track to make up positions, thats not racing mate as much as you like to think it is. Its absolute rubbish

    35. Vote -1 Vote +1Andrew M
      says:

i honestly think they relaxed the standards in order to promote a bit more exciting racing.

who wants to see people just plodding around minding their own business?

also the change in the points score encourages it as well as encouraging damaged (and then repaired) vehicles to get back out there and chase a few points rather than just parking it like many did last year

    36. Vote -1 Vote +1Richo
      says:

and Andrew, James Courtney wasn’t obviously slower then craig at all. It was just after a safety car period and that means everyones tyres go off a bit, lose a bit of pressure and it takes a bit for them to come back. Thats the only reason courtney was slightly slower at the time, before then courtney had been the fastest guy on the track so you can hardly say he was obviously slower.

If a slower car is infront then obviously you can have a go, but if courtney really was slower then lowndes, how come lowndes couldn’t pass him cleanly? why did he have to push him off the track? I’ll tell you why, because in reality there was bugger all in it as far as pace goes!

    37. Vote -1 Vote +1Andrew M
      says:

mate i never said you said what jamie did was acceptable.

i quoted you as saying what went on during the round was technically legal.

      says:

Andrew, again, since when has driver a pushing driver b off the circuit to make up a position ever been considered good racing?

When craig was making those moves at turn 9, he knew full well he wouldn’t be able to pull his car up in time for the corner, he was all locked up and was using first winterbottom, then holdsworth and finally courtney to actually get around the corner, and courtney said “nup stuff you mate” and fought back, then craig just randomly turns in on him despite the fact that courntey was clearly up to the b-pillar which means you have to give room, but not Sir Craig… everyone is supposed to just get out of his way didnt you know? Roland said so!

    39. Vote -1 Vote +1Andrew M
      says:

      Richo,
he obviously was slower as craig was right up his clakker for a few laps.
the “tyres coming up to temp” was cromptons theory. wouldnt lowndes have struggled the same fate?

it was recorded that courtney was lapping 1-1.5 secs slower!!!
either way it was obvious lowndes was being held up at the time.

im not a big “ooohhhhh its lowndesy fan” im saying it how i feel it is.
i actually hold high praise for JC as his racing history coming through the ranks shows he is a talented driver. unluke many JC didnt simply buy his seat at SBR.
sure JC had great pace all weekend (possibly the best pace) but it was just unlucky he came undone the few times he did.

turn it up andrew he wasnt that much slower, there was a few tenths in it thats all. Whincup was only half a second up the road at the time, so if he was 1-1.5 seconds a lap slower then old whincup in the same car as lowndes must have been traveling pretty darn slowly!

Sorry but I still think Richo is right, and if Lowndes still had a car at that time to continue in he would have got a drive through for cutting James off.

Lowndes cut in front of James, maybe James was slower but Craig shouldn’t have been so aggressive,he had already been lucky with Coldbum letting him through….

I do agree though Andrew with the fact that James was equally as aggressive during the race. He had been real lucky up till that, whats the go with the Ford drivers….their obviously frustrated.

      Lol, getting back on topic…

If anyone is interested they played waltzing matilda exactly the same way F1 played their tune. The song is software mapped by the engineers, James Courtney sits in the car at full throttle then the software mapping drops cylinders to get the different notes.

Have a listen about half way through on one of the low notes…the car has dropped at least 4 cylinders.

      says:

Good on both CL & JC for racing hard. Watch european touring car series and this sort of racing is the norm. CL’s pass on Frosty was partly Frost’s fault for squeezing Lowndes onto the dirty line then onto the curb. Same with Holdsworth. JC changed lines pretty late b4 the major crash which is not allowed (you can only change direction once and he took the outside line then when CL went for the inside he chopped him so lowndes was committed and just touched him) then at the contact down the road it was a very similar clash that happened between Ambrose & Murph at Bathurst a couple of years ago. JC should of just backed off on the kink, Lowndes was past him and had to turn in. Now Wingnut’s passes on FPR on Saturday were touch & go. But the pass on Richo was more controversial than on Frosty but I think he was passed the B-pillar both times. I think JC should of maybe got pinged for the pass on murph but I think murph played his own part in cutting JC off thats why I think they let JC off.

JC should of won the round cos he obviously had the fastest car on the weekend but after that safety car he was obviously much slower hence why Lowndes made the move. But the end result I think cant be called anything but a racing incident. Its the 1st round back and everyone is keen to start the year well, even more so with HRT struggling and not scoreing many points. Lets hope the action isn’t stifled by knee jerk reactions.

BTW I’m no way a Lowndes supporter but support anyone driving a blue oval so I’m just saying how I saw the incidents. I was more pissed off at the drive through for Junior for over lapping, Coulthard obviously had a problem. Which was a shame cos Coulthard was doing an amazing job to have the PCR car in 5th on its own merit. Good on Cam Mc and BJR, too bad it was with Holden but they deserve results and congrats to Shane Van Gisbergan on an excellent 5th, he is a definate star of the future.

Now back on topic, with the control ECU’s on the V8’s you can’t customise the mapping that much to be able to do that so I think JC did that all himself.

    53. Vote -1 Vote +1Jason
      says:

Lol, Glen you don’t have a clue what your talking about mate. The ECU is completely reprogrammable, all the engineer has to do is run a series of spark cuts to drop cylinders, easy as mate.

    54. Vote -1 Vote +1Glen
      says:

How do you know Jason? You may be right but to my knowledge the mapping of the V8 Supercar ECU is severly limited compared to what you used to be able to do. I know you can do this with a freer ECU but I thought the V8 ECU was controlled

    55. Vote -1 Vote +1Andrew M
      says:

Glen, i agree with you mate.

      1. JC deserved to win both races as all bar the session after the safety car he was easily the fastest out there.

      2. JC did more than his fair share of barging through the field too so he cant whinge

      3. frosty also squeezed CL up on the curb rather than giving him racing room.

      4. if JC had thought about it a little more he would have stayed on the racing line and tried to cross back on lowndes.

      5. yep the worst decision was to end Steve Johnsons good run by that terrible penalty for overlapping.

dont forget it was at the very same track last year where i think it may have been Mcconville (i think) was penalised for punting the Jack daniels commodore even though the LPR machine had stalled just around the blind corner and even the victim had pleaded that no penalty should be applied.

i think they need to issue such penalties with an open mind and actually consider feed back from teams.
i mean whats wrong with once both teams state their case and the standards observer saying “well sorry i got it wrong”

oh and in summary it wasnt only CL that was rubbing paint. just because it was a battle for 2nd and he is a popular man people seem to want to drill him.
what about the biff and barge from the HSV/DT guys and Paul morris? and also JC himself. and what about the poor welcoming Andrew Thompson got to the category?
