smart forspeed concept revealed before Geneva

Images of the smart forspeed concept have surfaced ahead of the vehicle’s official unveiling at next week’s Geneva Motor Show.

Although destined to remain a concept, smart says the styling of the topless micro car – especially the pumped-up, broader stance – is a preview of the all-new smart fortwo and other future smart products. The next smart fortwo is expected to be released around 2014.

The ‘ed’ in forspeed stands for ‘electric drive’. The vehicle is powered by a 30kW rear-mounted electric motor that has a range of 135km. An 80 percent fast charge can be achieved in just 45 minutes.

An overboost switch on the dashboard increases power by 5kW and takes the smart forspeed to a not-so-speedy 120km/h top speed.

The Daimler-owned manufacturer says the sprint from 0-60 comes up in 5.5 seconds, but that’s 60km/h, not 60mph. I guess it sounds better than 0-37mph though.

Outside, the forspeed concept features intricate LED headlights and taillights, a photovoltaic solar cell in the base of the windscreen, and a plug-in socket hidden behind the rear badge.

Inside, there is an iPhone dock display system on the passenger side of the dashboard, as well as healthy smatterings of brushed aluminium and green and brown leather.

The full details of the smart forspeed concept will be revealed when it hits the stand at Geneva on March 1.
