Video: BMW 1 Series ActiveE Geneva preview

BMW has announced it will be unveiling the production version of the BMW 1 Series ActiveE Concept at the upcoming Geneva Motor Show in a couple of weeks.

The BMW 1 Series ActiveE is an all-electric vehicle which BMW is going to test over the next few years to see how well it operates in modern-day infrastructures. BMW has said it is planning to produce around 1000 examples of the car that will be available to selected members of the public in Europe, China and the US through a lease plan.

The ActiveE is powered by an electric synchronous motor that develops 125kW of power and 250Nm of torque - or, around the same output as a turbocharged, petrol MINI Cooper S. BMW says the ActiveE provides acceleration swift enough to conquer 0-100km/h in 9.0 seconds, and provide a limited top speed of 145km/h.

Power for the car comes from three lithium-ion batteries that are placed in the engine bay, gearbox tunnel and fuel tank area of the 1 Series. The car is also fitted with regenerative technology so that when the driver is coasting to a stop or down a hill, power is generated, charging the batteries to assist battery range.

BMW says the ActiveE has a range of around 160km, depending on driving conditions. The batteries can be fully recharged from empty in around five hours using a 32-ampere socket, or, overnight using a conventional household wall socket.

It seems like a nifty little package overall, the only problem with it is luggage space over the standard 1 Series is reduced by 200 litres due to the battery hardware in the boot.
