Top Gear China pilot episode features Cadillac vs donkey

Following rumours last week that Top Gear China was on the way, today we have confirmation that a pilot episode has been filmed.

The spin-off of one of the most popular television programs (… in the world) was confirmed by one of the shows hosts, Beijing comedian and TV personality, Cao Yunjin.

Cao told Chinese publication Global Times the 30-minute opening episode followed a similar format to the BBC version, with three men playing the roles of Clarkson, Hammond and May, although with their own style of humour.

He explained the Chinese version would be toned down from the BBC program, with the hosts and producers wary of complying with the government’s censorship requirements.

“The [BBC] boys go crazy with cars in the show, like pushing a Maserati over the top of a three-story building and smashing it,” Cao said.

“It may be too much violence for a fun program in China. We will do more localised fun stuff.”

The first episode will answer the age-old question for Chinese viewers: what is more effective at pushing millstones around a farmyard: a Cadillac or a donkey?

There is no official premiere date for Top Gear China, although it is understood the nation’s state broadcaster, China Central Television (CCTV), will broadcast the program.

Cao confirmed the show would feature reviews of luxury and sports cars, as well as more humble Chinese domestic vehicles.
