Ferrari California Race 606 by Novitec Rosso

It might be based on the Ferrari California, but this version is by acclaimed German Ferrari tuner, Novitec Rosso. It’s officially called the Novitec Rosso Race 606, signifing the car’s peak horsepower.

It’s not that the Ferrari California is slow, but Novitec Rosso like their special edition Ferrari’s to be a little quicker than the cars that roll out of Maranello. The standard 4.3 litre V8 gets a supercharger and various other performance additions taking output from 460 hp/338 kW to 606 hp/446 kW. Torque gains are equally substantial jumping from 485 Nm to 603 Nm. Top speed for the Race 606 increases to 325km/h, while 0-100km/h is over in less than 3.8 seconds.

Novitec Rosso are careful not to play around with the superb Ferrari engine, as they told CarAdvice when we were testing with them in Germany in 2009 that:

“there is no point in trying to improve the engine itself, as it’s close to perfection, but the supercharger provides a significant performance boost, without upsetting the soul of engine itself.”

The supercharger produces a maximum boost on 0.4 bar with the added benefit of a water-to-air intercooler and a new intake manifold and larger injectors.

Novitec have also added their own high performance exhaust system that is flap controlled to offer several sound settings, which is an essential bit of kit when arriving home late from diner in Monaco, or passing through sleepy French villages on your way to Le Mans.

There’s also an extensive aerodynamic package that includes front and rear spoilers and the rear diffuser, which are crafted from matte clear-coated carbon fibre, for additional lightness and durability. Other aero aids include side air outlets in the front splitter, rocker panel blades, mirror covers and rear molding.

The hood intake is also made from carbon fibre as is the radiator grille and the outer skin of the folding hardtop.

The Novitec Rosso NF3 wheels are especially tasty with the same matte carbon fibre coating, which are shod with matching Pirelli P-Zero tyres in staggered sizes – 255/30 ZR 21s and 315/25 ZR22s.

The car’s ride height has also been lowered by some 35mm by the addition of the special Novitec Rosso sport springs. However, the issue of everyday useability is addressed by the hydraulic front lift system, which raises the car by 40mm and is activated by a button on the centre console.

As the saying goes, if you have to ask the price, you probably can’t afford it. Suffice to say, that Novitec are a premium Ferrari tuner and prices vary with the level of personalisation that each customer chooses.
