Porsche Panamera long wheelbase on the way: report
Porsche is apparently developing a long wheelbase version of its sports sedan, the Porsche Panamera. The long wheelbase will provide more legroom for rear seat passengers and will rival the likes of various luxury long wheelbase cars in the US and China, such as the Audi A8, BMW 7 Series, Jaguar XJ and Mercedes-Benz S-Class.
Porsche hasn't officially confirmed that such a model is in development yet, but reports quoting insider sources have revealed that demand for an extended Panamera is very high in America and China so Porsche will be creating a model to satisfy that market segment.
A Porsche insider reportedly even leaked information on possible dimensions of the LWB version, telling UK publication Autocar that the LWB model will stretch the Panamera by up to 120mm. This would give the Panamera LWB an overall wheelbase length of 3040mm.
The stretch is said to be concentrated on the rear door section of the car's construction, with most of the length added to the rear doors. Larger rear doors would then allow easier access to the rear seats, and provide ample legroom for chauffeur-driven passengers.
The Porsche Panamera LWB isn't expected to hit US and Chinese markets any time soon though. In fact, reports say it isn't likely to see light of day until sometime in 2012.
An Australian model is unlikely as development could be designated for left-hand drive vehicles only, but it is too early to say for sure. We'll keep you updated.
