Volkswagen Golf24 to enter 2011 Nurburgring 24 Hour

The famous 24-hour annual endurance race at Germany's Nurburgring this year is about to be accompanied by a new hatchback. Yes, Volkswagen will be racing a purpose-built hatch called the Volkswagen Golf24 at this year's event.

The car features a brutal 2.5-litre five-cylinder engine (also seen in the Audi TT RS), tuned up to develop a gut-wrenching 324kW of power - that amount of power in a small hatch is sure to be truly epic. Volkswagen says the car also includes an all-wheel drive system and offers 540Nm of torque, which is sure to rip the car out of corners with ease.

The car will be one of the main attractions at the event, and it will be the first time a factory-backed Volkswagen Golf will be competing. Volkswagen Motorsport Director, Kris Nissen, recently spoke about the car at its unveiling. He said,

"With our spectacular Golf we want to provide an additional highlight in front of a large audience – right in time for the 35th anniversary of the GTI."

What a way to celebrate the birthday. The Volkswagen Golf24 will compete in its debut race at the Nurburgring 24 hour in June, held at the Nurburgring-Nordschleife racing circuit.
