2012 Shelby GT350 unveiled with first convertible since 1970

Shelby has unveiled a new limited edition 2012 Shelby GT350 at the 2011 Chicago Auto Show. The new model now comes in convertible form as an option and gets two new colours and three engine packages, including a 466kW supercharged V8.

Based on the Ford Mustang, the Shelby GT350 is a car for the true die-hard Mustang fans. Like all Shelby Mustangs, the new GT350 is a limited edition which means it's very exclusive, and, presumably, going to be worth a packet in the distant future.

Unveiling the new 2012 GT350 in convertible form means this will be the first time the performance car specialist has introduced a droptop GT350 since 1970, so this is a model that is bound to be a treasured classic.

The new car comes in two brand-new colour schemes: Race Red and Kona Blue, both featuring the traditional twin white Le Mans stripes down the middle of the entire car.

As mentioned, the new car also comes in three engine flavours. The entry-level model gets a normally aspirated V8 offering 320kW of power. The next step up gets a supercharged V8 offering 392kW of power, while the top-spec model (not for the faint-hearted) gets more boost and offers an incredible, tyre-shredding 466kW of power.

The man himself, Mr Carroll Shelby, founder of Shelby American, said a few words about the cars at the unveiling, saying,

"Last year, we brought back the GT350 45 years after it was launched. They look and sound just like the ones we built in 1965. We’re repeating history by offering two additional colors and building a few convertibles for the second year of production."

As Mr Shelby said, only 350 2012 Shelby GT350s will ever be made. Prospective buyers should have their cheque books at the ready as these are expected to sell fast.
