Well me and wife just took both the Mazda 2 (maunual) and Ford Fiesta CL (manual), both in the 5 door version for a test drive today because we are in the market for that type of vehicle. And just quietley we don’t agree on much these days but we actually both think for that little extra cash the Ford Fiesta is well worth it with respect to driveability!

Hi Rod,
Thanks for the posting/reviw, it probably one of the first “real” review I’ve seen on the new fiesta. I was actually thinking of purchasing one over the Mazda 2 and now you given me some food for thought. Its incredible that it does not come with rear speakers!! Is it an extra cost option? How about the petrol consumption, still high?
Any more feedback is soo welcomed as I am looking to purchase…….

Rod, I live in Spain and your post makes me very happy! I am about to buy an AUTOMATIC Fiesta, but due to polio my leg is weak and need a car with very sensitive brakes. I have not been able to test one here in Spain.
Hope the European brakes are as \”sudden\” as yours!
Anyone have noticed that too?

Rod, I live in Spain and your post makes me very happy! I’m planing to buy an AUTO Fiesta and I need it to have VERY sensitive brakes as my leg is weak due to polio. Hope the spanish model will have the same “sudden braking” of yours!
Anyone thinks the same?

I’m an owner of a 2009 Ford Fiesta Automatic CL model. I had some brake safety issues with it since I drove off the dealership. I thought it would improve over time but I had to send it to their service center 3 times already during the 200km to 1600km run, which is barely not much.

The brake is too responsive and gives you that “sudden braking response” even when you actually try to engage the brake pedal as softly as possible. It’s very annoying especially when you try to position the car into the garage or try to maneuver to get out of the garage. Or when you’re driving on the road or highway, and you need to put the brakes on, and suddenly you’ll be greeted with that “too responsive braking” which is obviously a very dangerous and major safety issue.

Anyway, on the 3rd visit, their service mechanics had to “chamfer the brake pads” which means they had to cut some off it, making the surface area of the brake pads smaller) – which eventually reduced the “sudden braking” response of my car.

I also found out that the rear speakers of my car was not working, so I complained about it with their service center, only to be informed that my car was not meant to have a rear speaker (so they found the rear speakers “blank”, BUT physically, the rear speakers outlet are visible which you would assume they have speakers in them). This really made me feel upset. You pay a gross amount of at least $21,000 inclding on road costs, just to know that your car does not even have a simple/standard rear speakers installed in it.

The other thing is that, on fuel consumption, it’s currently using more than 50% higher than the one specifiec under it’s technical specs. But the service center told me to wait until the engine have done more than 5,000 km because at the moment, it’s still a green engine (meaning still under running-in stage). So, I’m closely monitoring the consumption every fill of fuel I make, and recording it on my logbook.

Generally, I am not that happy having purchased one of the 2009 Ford Fiesta Automatic CL range. Hopefully, it will prove itself to be better over time, but hoping should not be a part of any customer’s experince in buying a brand new car.

Ripoff, firstly, Ford has been using its kinetic design a few years before the Mazda 2 was released, so actually Mazda copied Ford. Secondly, if you actually saw both in the metal and sat in them, you’d realise that they are quite different despite using the same platform. Third the Fiesta drives better than the Mazda 2, so for all its apparent ‘copying’, its still better.

Fourth, this article was published over a year ago, Why are you even digging it up when there’s the Fiesta first drive article, Fiesta long term test article and the Fiesta review. Bizarre

Yeh – they are pretty good diesels, 1.4litre 50Kw 160Nm – fast enough and economical, 1.6litre 66Kw 204Nm faster and fairly economical. All ford really need to do is a fast diesel like VAG do

Next time you see a Mazda 2 look at it as full on front and side. Then look at back and like the Santa Fe the bottom of rear tailights are way too smiley turned upwards which wreck the look. This is why currently the Yaris has it all over opposition – mind you the Mazda 2 will still give it a massive scare if not win the sales race between em!

Ha Ha Ha….if I was coming off HMAS Endeavour behind Captain Cook it would of been nigh truly impossible to negotiate a resolution or meet on common ground! The fact Cook and others came off boat was a threat. Alas a sorry is cool in a way but it could not have changed if time was again.

That looks really good, I like this and the Mazda 2. Ford will be bring them from Thailand aswell, so they should be cheaper than the current model.

Looks like slightly better Mazda2 going off these pics (I dont think it would have projectors… at least in lower models)… certainly is a rip off of Mazda2
