Renault brings Red Bull Race Off to Australian Grand Prix

Four Red Bull racers from four different motorsport disciplines will come together at the 2011 Formula One Australian Grand Prix in a one-off event called the Red Bull Race Off.

Formula Renault 3.5 and Toro Rosso third driver Daniel Ricciardo, retired F1 legend David Coulthald, V8 Supercars racer Rick Kelly and motocross champion Robbie Maddison will go head to head in a five-lap challenge around the Albert Park circuit on Saturday March 26.

Renault Australia has prepared four Megane Renault Sport 250 vehicles for the Race Off with a number of CAMS regulation modifications.

The 184kW/340Nm hot hatches have been fitted with full six-point roll cages and window nets, racing seats with five-point harnesses and fire extinguishers to ensure the drivers are as safe as possible.

The Megane Renault Sport 250 is fitted with a six-speed manual transmission and accelerates from 0-100km/h in just 6.1 seconds courtesy of the vehicle’s ‘Power Start’ launch control system.

Australia’s next big thing in Formula One, Daniel Ricciardo, admitted he was excited about the unique concept.

“I can’t believe I’ll be competing against David Coulthard,” Ricciardo said.

“Robbie could be a dark horse – in Austria a few years ago a couple of the Red Bull junior drivers were giving him some tips, so I expect him to be on the money.

“Rick of course is also very talented and a bit more used to the sedans than the rest of us, so he will be the favourite.”
