Tougher Euro NCAP overhaul

February 8, 2008 by George Skentzos

The Euro NCAP is set to receive an overhaul next year to prevent car manufacturers from skewing the current star ratings system in their favour.

Tougher Euro NCAP overhaul

The changes will entail combining the currently separate adult occupant protection, child occupant protection and pedestrian protection rating into one single score.

Previously car manufacturers have quoted only their best scoring category, not giving an accurate indication of a vehicles true safety performance.

“We’ve seen great advances in the occupant protection of cars since our tests started in 1997. Many models now get a full five stars for adult safety. However, the same can’t be said for pedestrian protection. Maybe the way our rating system works is to blame, as it has allowed firms to publicise only their vehicle’s occupant protection score.”

Euro NCAP’s secretary general Michiel van Ratingen hopes these changes will encourage manufactures to improve all areas of occupant and pedestrian safety, as currently an average of all three scores largely reveals poor results.

There are also plans to introduce testing on whiplash protection and awarding bonus marks for crash avoidance systems, such as electronic stability control.

make perfectly good sense to me. quite often the pedestrian NCAP fugures don’t get a mention.

  2. I don’t think a single score is the way to go. Multiple scores give a clearer view of what is really going on. A single score will make it easier to hide an area that is lacking so long as the vehicle performs consistently well in other areas. Not to mention things like child safety being very important to me at the moment, but not important to lots of other people because they don’t have kids. Multiple scores allow a buyer to best choose a vehicle that suits there needs.

  3. That should have been ‘their needs’………..but you probably knew that!

I think the 5-star rating is going to increaswe to 6-star, make it that bit harder for them.

Saw a Chinese Geeley crashed test, did not EVEN MAKE 1-STAR as it becomes your coffin. From car-to-coffin :-)

The point though Michael is that the article argues that manufacturers were only quoting the highest score of the multiple scores in their marketing campaigns, so this method forces them to take all the areas of safety into account, as one poor score will drag the average down.

i think front adult ratings is what should be shown. i dont think combining them is really fair.

although i do think they should publisise the other areas of test results a little more

  7. Duck says:

^^^^^^^For once Frugal One i agree with you! They should raise it to 6 star ANCAP score!

  8. carlover says:

If one such figure would be mentioned, I would not anymore be able to assess the front adult rating, which is what I am really interested in.
I will only pay for stranger protection if I am obliged to.

  9. Pedestrian rating? How dumb. Why not add a “suicidal squirrel” rating, and a “bug friendly windshield” rating too. Gees.
