Toyota implementing GPS brake-assist

It seems Toyota’s ultimate goal is for even the driver to become a passenger, having today outlined a system which will incorporate brake application into satellite navigation technology.
Using GPS data and a rear-mounted camera, the system will acknowledge an upcoming stop sign and calculate whether the driver has applied enough brake force to stop in time, if not the system takes over bringing the car to a halt.
Previously, Toyota has taken driving out of the hands of drivers with its self-parking system, which has achieved debatable success.
The typical GPS system in most cars is only accurate to around 15m, presumably this kind of technology would only be implemented on premium Lexus models where the high-end GPS software is accurate to within as little as 30cm.
The system is more than just a technological showcase, with Toyota set to release new models in Japan carrying the system in the near future.
Thankfully it appears as though the system relies on road markings unique to Japan, so it seems unlikely that it would make it into Australian spec vehicles.

i remember reading some 10 years ago that mercedes was working on such technology as self parking cars and GPS systems that could not only sense a stop sign but also speed zones and correct the drivers speed.
i wonder how mercedes have let toyota take the lime light away from them???
the best one (and probably most usefull) feature that i read about ages ago, that hasnt shown its face is braking incorporated into the Cruise control system.
i thought that would have been the first!!!!
it uses sensors on the front of the car much like reverse parking sensors and it can calculate the speed you are travelling at and the distance between the object in front of you.
if it figures you are too close (ie tailgating) it will ease on the brakes to maintain a safe following distance. alternatively if you are distracted it saves the embarrassing rear end collision.
surely that would be more worthy of an introduction than a car that can park itself. a hell of a lot of accidents are rear end colissions.
if you cant park a car how the hell did you get your license.

I recall many dummies pulling the mickey out of Toyota for persuing hybrid technology but now it seems they are all coming onboard. This latest example will probably prove no different. You dummies will spend the next few years critising Toyota with such advancement but when Holden and Ford gradually come onboard in about 50 years time, all of a sudden it’ll be the greatest thing going.
Oh yeah, i believe nothing can possibly be more white goods then those Daewoo toasters sold by Holden. Toyotas white goods are made by Fisher and Paykel whereas Holden trash is made by non-other then Tiffany apprentices on a sunday.

Seriously wtf? This technology exceeds everything that any other car maker can do and we still want to crap on it, sound like a bunch of religous zealots talking about the devil in electricty.
It’s Toyota that’s why, and (some) people just can’t stand a company that produces cars for the main market with outstanding success. Yes I know it’s sad really, they can’t give credit when it’s due.
Well its simple really.
There’s the customers… reads brochures, listens to sales people, watches ads, reads internet specs, discuss their car(s) to other people… again customers.
From the manufacturer’s perspective… “Thank You for buying us and not the other guys”.
Simple no?
Then theirs the know hows… and as much as mechanics and technicians who work with cars know about..err.. cars. Its still whats printed on the manual… its post manufacturing… post design… post design review… post engineering…
My point… is.
As “some” have said, if this was announced by let’s say… Mercedes (and kudos to them love their cars)… or VW or even Audi etc…
People here will say “Wow, they’re really pushing the envelope”.
But when its a Toyota… its automatically “oh.. yeah but its redundant… its for people who cant drive”
98% of vehicle buyers are not enthusiasts… most who buy new cars have families… I can tell you this… from an engineering design side of things… You can come up with exciting, revolutionary design… but if it fails in the safety category… its useless…
Also, again, just a tid bit, do you people KNOW.. that coming up with an engine with high hp and torque is EASY… simple… very actually. But coming up with a more sophisticated engine or engine quality build… its much tougher. I know for a fact that there’s so many engineers right now working on very mass produce friendly hybrid engine systems… and safety features.. than performance enhancements… because hate to say it.. performance engines these days are actually going to die out… seriously.
If only I can show you guys comparisons. benchmark evaluation results on a lets say a Toyota to a GM produced car… and see it from an engineering perspective.. you’d actually either laugh or just think… geez now I get it.. now I understand why so and so is perceived that way.. and you’d ask a lot of questions too.. like “what were they thinking”…. “Thats not efficiently designed”…. “that has a 3 year life span”

The Lexus design facilities and suppliers.. even assembly methods are pretty much the same as what you find in a euro luxury…
And once you actually realize how much the Body, chassis, engine build/design quality between them are very close… some lexus wins, some the bmw wins, some mercedes etc etc…. you’d realize that the price you pay for BMWs, mercedes, lexus to a lesser extent are incredibly inflated…. since I’ve been exposed to the behind the scene of the industry.. i wouldnt spend over 50K for a car, and thats AUD…
cars are really bad investments :-). Everyone should just lease a supercar for a week, trash it.. and call it a day… haha. But I understand some do like working on their cars come weekends and thats fair.. I do that too… hehe,

Looks like Lexus are doing very well to overtake BMW and Mercedes etc… Ive said it before and I will say it again, with these other brands you are literally paying $50k for the badge, Lexus in the premium market offers better bang for your buck.

Wheelnut, much unlike Daewoo, Diahatsu has a good name for building great little cars so you are getting at nothing. Toyota also owns Scion which just happens to be one of the best quality cars sold in the States. Facts still remain, Daewoo make up a good proportion of Holden these days and they are one of the worst quality cars sold anywhere.

If you don’t require this sort of stuff in your car, then great, don’t buy a Lexus. However, I guarantee you that there will be people, many people, who will buy the lexus cars exactly for safety features like this. With the profit margins of these cars around double that of non-luxury cars, Lexus will (no it IS) making huge profits.

the same statement can apply to those who cant reverse park to start with and those that cant get a car to park itself.
actually i think you will find that people themselves know when they can reverse park and will keep circling until they find a double park negating the need to reverse.
i do say well done to Lexus who appear to be set to be the first to put it to mass use though.
the only thing is i would prefer the cruise control braking system that i outlined earlier.
then i would say WOW thats really worth while
reverse parking would simply be a novelty item. it sounds nice and gooey in the sales room but i question the real benefits of it.

At least the lexus parking should reduce the number of car park accidents if it was widely implemented. (Well you’d hope so).
I’ve seen a guy attempt a forward park and crunch the car next to it. Me and 3 friends saw it all, this guy gets out and hes looking at us, trying to convince us that he didn’t contact the car. Hahaha denial.

At least we love our cars for what they are and don’t have to refer to any surveys or tests to back up how good they are..
Tests which are performed under controlled conditions and don’t allow for any external real world factors such as road surface weather conditions.
For starters the lab where the tests are done has a polished cement floor which would provide very little grip
And the cars are pulled towards the obstacle via a high powered winch whilst it runs along a straight track
thereby not allowing for any form of evasive action to be taken inorder to avoid the telegraph pole or rear of the truck.. action such as braking or swerving which I assume most drivers would at leat attemt to do
It would be more relevant if they could rig up a system where at a certain point the brakes are applied be it via remote control..
Which is why I am rather sceptical of the results of the ANCrAP tests particularly aftre the reports concerning the tests between the VE Commodore and the Aurion

Would i be wrong to suggest that most mod cons in cars today would simply be novelty items. As long as manufactuers have covered thier bases by suppling the market with safe and reliable transport, everything else crammed into a car these days are exactly that – novelty items and nothing more so i don’t undertsand what you are trying to achieve, if anything at all.
Do we really need novalties such as CD players and stackers, cruise control, climate control, electric windows, trip computers, GPS (what about a good ole referdex), sunroof, remote keys and may the list endlessly continue.
The answer to that is obviously NO, but we have them because we the consumers enjoy such luxuries. You personally may not like mod cons such as self-parking and GPS brake assist but Toyota would likely be on the boil to suggest that a market does (or could) exsist.
What i find amusing about this conversation is that the odds are in the approaching years all these will most likely become standard features in cars such as ABS, ESP, BA, EBD, airbags and so are predominately today and when they do, the same individuals will then praise the likes of Holden and Ford for employing such luxuries and i believe i won’t be far from the truth to suggesting that.
Lets take hybrid technology for example. For years companies like GM and Ford critised Toyota for strongly persuing such tech but now it appears they are now trying to play catch up – why is that exactly. Basically, Toyota’s foresight was years beyond that of GM, Ford and just about everybody else for that matter with exception to Honda off course.
Wheelnut, NCAP tests are the only official tests that we the consumer have to guage the safety ratings of vehicles today and they most certainly provide the market with a much more accurate indication then the opinions of individuals of which are all to often wrong.
What evidance do you hold to suggest that a Holden or Ford would be a safer car in real life accidents then say a Toyota, Honda, Mazda, Hyundai etc because as far as i am concerned – they probably won’t be. Infact, an Aurion could just aswell prove to be a better car then a Commodore or Falcon by all accounts.
Lets take the provoked Kluger roll-over for example. The good that came from that apart from Toyota proving that Wheels recollection of the incident was bullsh*t according to the downloaded information from the ECU, but the structual integrity and effectiveness of the pretensioners were highlighted.
The article also went to say that Toyota’s ABS calibration is now amoung the best that can be found anywhere in the world. And lets not pass up the fact that Toyota’s Safe-T-Cell is a regarded and globally recognised structure including the fact they do exhibit all the safety mod cons and ratings to support thier vehicles.

It was clearly the next step for the car to completely disconnect the driver from the experience. After all, the Corolla was already unattached to the everything that touches the road.

By all means the new Corolla has receieved many good write ups about it’s handling, refinement, quality and general egonomics bar it’s lack of ESP. Histories biggest selling car in the world, surely that carn’t happen easily.
I guess ones whole body would be completely disconnected if they got crash tangled in one of those ‘Holden’ Barina’s. But then again, anyone would have to be disconnected to buy a Daewoo from Holden in the very first place.
Do you buy aged old cars with no driver aids or comfort features so you can feel connected and don’t give a stuff about the safety of yourself or more importantly, that of other motorists because only a drongo would.
If the car drives itself u may as well catch a train.
