2012 Porsche 911 Cabriolet spy shots

Porsche has recently been caught testing the upcoming 2012 Porsche 911 Cabrio in extreme winter conditions. The spy shots show the car is in the final stages of testing as there is little camouflaging left on the car.

Only little bits of camouflage material remain around the headlights, tail lights and some of the front grille details on this test model, which is rumoured to be called the 991 911 (current model 997 911).

The new model is said to be longer by 5.6cm meaning it will present a lower profile. The car will also be around 13mm lower at the roof line, so it might offer more interior room in terms of length but overall headroom is likely to be the same as the current model.

For some reason Porsche keeps fitting the rear wheel arch air vent sticker onto its test mules. Whether Porsche is trying to say all new models will feature the real vent (normally only present on the Turbo model) or not is yet known.

Other new features include smaller more intricate headlights and spot lights, again, taking design cues from the current 911 Turbo. This Cabrio soft-top version will also get a revised roof design featuring a clean-cut swooping shape.

Powering the new Porsche 911 will be a range of new engines. Reports have said the 2012 model will get a new entry-level 3.4-litre engine offering up to 257kW of power, while the range-topping Carrera S will get a 295kW 3.8-litre (around the same power as the old Porsche 911 GT3).

The 2012 Porsche 911 Cabrio is expected to debut alongside the rest of the 911 range at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September later this year.
