2011 Subaru Trezia compact MPV not for Australia

The Subaru Trezia compact MPV will be unveiled at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show in March ahead of its launch in various European markets.

But there are no plans for the Honda Jazz-sized hatch to go on sale locally, with Subaru Australia’s David Rowley today telling CarAdvice it was not under consideration.

“There are no plans for it here,” Mr Rowley said.

He said Subaru Australia was “absolutely committed” to its all-wheel drive/boxer engine ethos – two specific features the European-specification Trezia will make do without.

Questioned whether he believed there was a demand for a sub-Impreza-sized vehicle in the Australian Subaru lineup, Mr Rowley offered only this:

“We’re happy with the structure of our range and have no intentions to change it.”

The Subaru Trezia is the sister car to the Toyota Verso-S, which was revealed last September at the Paris Motor Show and is due for launch next month.

In Europe, both vehicles will feature a 1.3-litre petrol engine and a 1.4-litre diesel engine.

In the Toyota, the petrol unit is capable of combined cycle fuel economy of 5.5 litres/100km and CO2 emissions of 127g/km, while the diesel is even more frugal at 4.3 litres/100km and 113g/km.

The Trezia’s dimensions – 3990mm long, 1695mm wide, 1585mm tall – are almost identical to the Honda Jazz.

The Jazz – with its $16,990 starting price – has established a strong market in Australia, with 9130 sales giving it a 6.7 percent share of the light car market in 2010.

Subaru’s smallest vehicle available in Australia, the Impreza, starts at $23,490. Sales in 2010 totalled 12,289 – 5.3 percent of the small car market.
