Our spy photographers have managed to snap the upcoming Lancia Ypsilon undergoing extreme winter testing in northern Sweden, where temperatures hovered around the -20C mark.
The Lancia Ypsilon is the company’s smallest and most fuel-efficient car. With the Fiat/Chrysler alliance getting stronger – remembering that Fiat owns Lancia – speculations say some of the technology brought over from Chrysler into Fiat could trickle over to Lancia as well.
Although it’s unlikely this Ypsilon will feature a Chrysler platform of any sort, engines and specific driveline components could certainly be shared. It’s also rumoured the next Ypsilon might be available in hybrid, or even completely electric form – technology of which that could be borrowed from the Fiat/Chrysler partnership.
It is very unlikely Australia will see the introduction of the Lancia Ypsilon any time soon as most Lancias are made as strict left-hand drive only models. But there might be another way the Ypsilon could make its way Down Under.
About a year ago, Fiat boss, Sergio Marchionne, said Australia could see the introduction of some Lancia models, only they would be rebadged as a Chrysler. He also said both companies would be able to provide a broader showroom to our market, as the current Chrysler fleet is relatively small offering mainly large cars. Lancia vehicles could then make up a smaller car showroom segment.
Another way that Lancia could make its way to our shores is through Lancia itself. Marchionne said the company was interested in expending the market of its cars over to the UK, this would result in right-hand drive versions being made. So there’s still hope yet.
Details of the 2012 Lancia Ypsilon are scarce at this stage but the car is expected to be unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in March. We look forward to providing more details then.
