2025 Chery Omoda 9 all but confirmed for Australia

The 2025 Chery Omoda 9 appears set to join the Australian line-up in the coming months.

At about 4770mm long, the Omoda 9 is only marginally larger than the 4720mm Tiggo 8 Pro Max due in Chery showrooms imminently – and is half a size class larger than two other Chery mid-size SUVs, the 4500mm-long Jaecoo J7 and 4513mm Tiggo 7 Pro.

Chery has submitted approval documents for the Omoda 9 with the Australian Government, pointing to a launch of the new mid-size to large SUV powered by a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder engine producing approximately 183kW and 385Nm.

It is likely buyers will be able to choose between front- or all-wheel drive, both using seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmissions – with a claimed 0-100km/h acceleration time of 7.9 seconds.

Despite the official documentation, a spokesperson for Chery Australia would not confirm the model for showrooms, telling Drive the new Omoda 9 was merely "under consideration".

However, the spokesperson did confirm all models in the Omoda family would be sold as Chery vehicles, and the company wouldn't be spinning off the Omoda name as its own brand in the Australian market – as it plans to with Jaecoo.

At 4774mm long, 1932mm wide, 1686mm tall, and with a wheelbase of 2800mm, the Omoda 9 is roughly the same size as a Kia Sorento – and slightly larger than a Mitsubishi Outlander – but will only come with five seats.

This is due to the Omoda 9's sloping rear silhouette – almost making it an SUV coupe – and eliminating headroom for third-row passengers for the sake of aerodynamics and style.

While specifications have not yet been announced, in other markets, the Chery comes with a 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen, a Sony sound system, a powered driver's seat, digital instrument cluster, and a panoramic sunroof.

Overseas, the Omoda 9 is badged as the Exeed RX – with Exeed being a Chery sub-brand pitched as a luxury marque, suggesting the new SUV will offer a greater level of features and more luxurious finishes.
